LOVE 020 TV Series Review

Disclaimer: Pictures of the tv series and Love 020, are definitely not mine.

Love 020 TV Series is available on both Netflix and Viki for viewing. Woohoo! Thank you #Netflix & #Viki

Anyways like with the movie version, I wanted to check this tv series out because I thought it would be interesting to see how ‘Just One Smile is Very Alluring’ / Love 020 novel will be adapted on screen. Once again like in my previous post…the Love 020 movie version review. I read the online translated version of the novel, so I cannot exactly say I read the book. But I can definitely say my curiosity of all the versions grew.

Also, FYI, if you have not read my previous review there is also a movie version available on Netflix with a different set of cast members with Angelababy and Jing Boran playing the lead roles.

Oh and I haven’t checked it out yet but I so will. There has been a manga version for a while, published on Manga Rock in 2017. *Sigh and I was having such a hard time looking for the translated book version. Can’t believe I didn’t thought of checking for a manga version, since all I mainly knew about is the novel. But oh well…

Not sure yet if I will do a review on the manga version. But let me know if you want to me to.

Anyways…

First off, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film and television… at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this tv series review as tv lover and book lover…well cause like the movie version, this tv series is an adaptation of a Chinese novel. And just to add, I apologise if at some point I might run on with my words or have grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Anyways Love 020 is based on the novel of the same name by Gu Man and that is also called “Just One Smile is Very Alluring” (above pic). Anyways I read the novel online…well the English translation one that was quite condensed too, so I cannot really say it is a full novel, word for word in English translation… But I can say though it got me interested enough to the point that I tried hunting down the English translated book version, and had no luck at all.

But for me, even with the condensed English translated online version, I found it pretty good even though some of the translations seems quite elaborate. For an example, a single word name of an character is quite long and descriptive for a name, but at the same time in my opinion is not something to make a big deal of, especially since I find it quite fascinating…because I am learning another’s culture…in this case through a novel. And as I mentioned earlier I learned just recently there has been a manga version for a while, published on Manga Rock in 2017. *Sigh and I was having such a hard time looking for the translated book version. I haven’t checked out the manga version yet but I sooo will. Anyways this novel was the main reason why I wanted to check out both the tv series and the movie version.

But right now though, I will most likely compare the three different versions of Love 020… the online translated version of novel, the movie version and of course the tv version which will be the made focus of this entry.

Warning! I might give some spoilers but I will try my best not to give them all the away 😁✌️ Most especially if you have plans on watching this yourself.

Okay here it is goes…

I will start first by talking about the main leads Zheng Shuang and Yang Yang

Zheng Shuang is a popular and beautiful Chinese actress who is rose to fame for her role as Chu Yuxun in ‘Meteor Shower.’ And for becoming the youngest actress to be nominated for Best Actress at the China TV Golden TV Awards. And she experienced a two-year slump for a before her career resurgence starring as a fox spirit in ‘Swords of Legends’ and starring in the ‘Love Weaves Through a Millennium’ which is a Chinese version remake of South Korea’s ‘Queen In-hyun’s Man” and she also participated in a travel reality show called ‘Divas Hit the Road.’ Soon after followed by Love 020. Which led to more roles after that.

Anyways in Love 020 TV Series, Zheng Shuang plays the female main lead “Bei Wei Wei”, who is considered the belle and department beauty of the computer science department and 2nd year in the university. Also rumored to be the one who should’ve won the title of school beauty. She is also the only female player in the Top 10 online RPG game, the same game Xao Nai is also playing in. She is known as “Luwei Weiwei” in the game. Anyways I thought Zheng Shuang was quite fantastic as Bei Wei Wei but will get to expound a little more on her character later.

While Yang Yang is a popular actor who made his debut in the Chinese drama ‘The Dream of Red Mansions.’ But what really helped spike his popularity was his performance in the coming of age film, ‘The Left Ear’ as well as participation in travel reality show ‘Divas Hit the Road’ which totally put him on top in the star ranking. He also starred in ‘The Lost Tomb’ and popular sports youth drama ‘The Whirlwind Girl.’ And soon after starring in the tv version of Love 020. Which was also soon after followed by even more roles and success.

Anyways in Love 020 TV Series, Yang Yang plays the male main lead “Xiao Nai”, who is the most popular handsome male student on campus, 4th year computer science student and highest-ranking player in the online RPG game in the same program Wei Wei is playing in. In the game he is known as Yixiao Naihe”. He gets attracted to Wei Wei first btw. Also, he and he friends started an game developing business while working on winning a competition. If they win they will be launch the online game they are developing and work with a major game company. Anyways I thought Yang Yang was quite fantastic as Xiao Nai but will get to expound a bit more on his character without spoiling too much of the tv version later.

Anyways slight recap of beginning and then my review…

Right of the bat in the tv version, we see Zheng Shuang as Bei Wei Wei going after the Boss/Monster or thief in the game. And what matches between this tv version and the movie version is in the beginning is where she is tag teaming in the game with her clan and played a major role in that baddie’s defeat. After the Boss/Monster was defeated, her first in -game partner / in game husband tries to coax her into meeting him in real life, then her computer breaks down. Weiwei goes to the repair shop with her bestie Erxi, and they have a run in with Weiwei rival for the first time. She then goes to the computer shop competes in another battle not knowing that Xiao Nai the most popular guy on campus is watching her finishing off her opponent skillfully before he walks away. This is considered the first time, Xiao Nai sees or notices her🤭 without her knowing 😁 Then the rest of Weiwei’s friends are introduced to the viewers then a scene showing Weiwei’s rival, then back to Weiwei again but this time in the game where her her first in -game partner / in game husband breaks up with her, which she tells her ex-partner she don’t might cause they only paired up for the challenges anyway. Not long after news that her ‘ex’ in partner gets a new partner, and her in game friend tells her people in game has rumors about Weiwei just because Weiwei doesn’t share her profile pic and is considered a mystery. Then not long after a close call with running into her ‘ex’ in game she runs into the mysterious top player Yixiao Naihe who asks her to be his in-game wife for a upcoming RPG challenge for ‘couples’ which she accepts cause at the time, she felt like being paired with the top player with definitely spike up her game ranking. In a separate scene, it is revealed to the viewers the Yixiao Naihe is Xiao Nai. Thus, this being the true start of Bei Weiwei’s and Xiao Nai’s story…

This btw is similar to how the translated online version of the novel was.

In the movie though… when her laptop computer breaks down during the opening game fight, she races to the computer shop, nearly crashing into someone who later on in movie is revealed to be Xiao Nai. Who follows her to the computer shop and watch her battle and help her team/clan defeat the baddie without her knowing. In this movie version, this is considered the first time, Xiao Nai sees or notices her🤭 without her knowing 😁 Then not long afterwards her first in -game partner / in game husband breaks up with her, which she tells her ex-partner she doesn’t mind because they are only paired up for the challenges anyway. Not long after, her bestie Erxi in the movie version who is already a long-time gamer is the one who then tell her about the rumors and her “in the game ex” marrying again in game. Btw, in the tv version, Weiwei’s bestie Erxi didn’t start gaming until later. Anyways then not long after in the movie version she has a close call with running into her ‘ex’ in game she runs into the mysterious top player Yixiao Naihe who asks her to be his in-game wife which she accepts cause at the time, she felt like being paired with the top player with definitely spike up her game ranking. In a separate scene, it is revealed to the viewers the Yixiao Naihe is Xiao Nai. Thus this being the true start of Bei Weiwei’s and Xiao Nai’s story..

Moving on…

Overall…if I am comparing the tv series to the English translation of the novel posted online to the movie version…of course there will be similarities but differences specially to fit the important parts in about a 2-hour long movie… Btw like I mentioned in my previous review of the movie version, it is one of those rare movie versions I can enjoy and tolerate. Cause there are some book to movie versions or anime to movie / tv versions I wasn’t too fond of….

But, like with the movie version, this Love 020 tv version stuck to me as well on how the main leads first interacted in the online game, how they run into each other outside the game without yet knowing the other’s online identity…well in our heroine case, cause our hero already knew who she was outside the game and made a move on her first in the game to be his game partner/wife 🤭. Only part that wasn’t planned was when he got into a incident which honestly is not a good thing but turned out to be a blessing in disguise cause it leads up to how they finally meet outside the game… to finally learn who each other are…well in Weiwei’s case. As well as them going through challenges together as their relationship blossoms.

Honestly, out of all the versions, I can say that the tv version is my favorite! 💗💗💗

I love the main leads! They have such strong chemistry! And I love the camaraderie of the main leads with their respective friends both within the game world and out of game. And totally love how all the characters really stand out too. I ended up adoring some of the supporting characters…most especially the supporting pairs like Erxi – Cao Guang and Hao Mei – KO.

Btw, KO is played by Vin Zhang aka Zhang Bin Bin who is a very popular handsome Chinese actor…in my opinion. I keep seeing him in most of the Chinese shows I have been interested in and I happened to idolize three of the actresses he worked with so far. Yang Mi, Dilreba Dilmurat and Ariel Lin respectively in like ‘Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms’ , ‘Pretty Li Huizhen’, ‘The King’s Woman,’ ‘The Flame’s Daughter,’ and ‘I Will Never Let You Go.’ All shows mentioned are on Viki and I plan on reviewing them too hehe.

Anyways there are slight differences with all three versions. Yet, the slight differences between the tv and the novel version is quite simple. The novel version is focused completely on the main characters, with slight mention of the supporting couples. The tv version is definitely focused on the main couple, their is more depth too and the supporting couples have a little more expounded back story which I love. While the movie version is a much-compressed version to fit an almost two hour or so film, mainly focused on the main couple but was still a well-produced movie.

Also, if I were to compare all the versions of Love 020, I have encountered and watched…the online translated book version, the movie version and the tv series version. All have their own uniqueness. The online translation of the novel of Love 020, leads up to when the main characters have a child. The movie version, leads up to them still being together, with a major possibility of them having a future together. While the tv version, leads up to them already preparing for marriage after Weiwei graduates.

Also, another difference is the movie version makes our male lead character Xiao Nai a little more human, and a little more flawed and his capability and intelligence a tad lesser level than both his novel and tv versions.

Cause in both the novel and tv versions, Xiao Nai is scary intelligent, a very capable guy with amazing foresight. Even our female lead in the three versions are a little different, yet still strong female characters. They all can handle and understand their respective Xiao Nais well enough even when at times he can easily read her move and they match well with their Xiao Nais well in my opinion. The slight difference is, in both the novel and tv version, Weiwei gets a little nervous and surprised by Xiao Nai so many times cause of how scary intelligent, capable he is and how amazing his foresight is. And the impression I got of him, is the if you are dealing with him, he can be quite intense ….you would blush easily or fan yourself despite him being reserved, calm, has really good control and cold to people in general. And as a viewer when he gets mad in his stoic way, aye, fans myself… He is gorgeous…yes… But you can feel the change in the atmosphere. Or you feel as if the weather changes according to his mood. That is how strong his aura is .LOL .

Anyways in the movie version, Xiao Nai’s personality from both the novel and tv version has toned that down quite a bit, making him a little bit more relatable.

Don’t get me wrong, I love tv version Xiao Nai, but he is definitely on a different league.

Anyways, all three versions, most especially the tv version in my opinion, are really good and entertaining… And totally worth the watch if given a chance. ️.. Which leads me to something I dealt with before watching the tv version. When I asked people their POV, some were put off by the female lead for being so skinny… I just want to say, whether or not you may feel the same. I still highly recommend this tv version. It is definitely worth the watch and I truly thought that not only all the actors and actresses are gorgeous and I totally believed that they played their roles well. And like the film version, the tv version was also very vibrant and since the concept is online couple taking their relationship to the real world, I found it magical.

Once again… Thank you @Netflix & @Viki for adding this to series to your lineup! This an awesome show, in my opinion 💗🤗💗

Anyways if you made it up to here… Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review on the tv version of Love 020 as well as my comparison the three different versions of Love 020.

Oh and as I mentioned earlier I learned just recently there has been a manga version for a while, published on Manga Rock back in 2017.
