Seraph of End: Vampire Reign Anime Review
First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this review as an anime lover…. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.
Moving on… I will first talk about the main characters of the anime Seraph of End: Vampire Reign … Yuichiro Hyakuya, Mikaela Hyakuya, Shinoa Hiragi, and Krul Tepes
Yuichiro Hyakuya is the main protagonist of the Seraph of End and he is sixteen-years-old. When Yuichiro was twelve, he and his best friend Mikaela planned to run away with the other kids of the Hyakuya Orphanage to escape vampires’ captivity. However their plan was thwarted by Ferid Bathory who slaughtered his “family” and his friend, Mikaela, who urged Yuichiro to run away, which in fact he regretted. One of Yuichiro’s driving forces is his grudge to kill all vampires for what they did to his family and Mikaela, yet he does not allow revenge to consume him and instead chooses to become strong for his new family, the Moon Company which he enlisted in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army for vampire annihilation. At the Moon Demon Company, he learns about teamwork. He is bit stubborn but when it comes to others, he is kind and genuinely cares for them. Upon finding that Mikaela is still alive as a vampire, he is overjoyed and immediately pledge to save Mikaela. After deciding that his new reason to live is to reclaim Mikaela from the vampires, he started to be less resentful and places more value in friends and friendship. In the Battle of Nagoya, Yuichiro reunited again with the badly wounded Mikaela, and he urged Mikaela to drink his blood to help his recovery and to keep living with him, saying does not care about Mikaela becoming a vampire. His Cursed Gear is Asuramaru a possession-type demon weapon which takes the form of a katana. He holds a mysterious power that causes him to try to attack everyone calling them ‘sinners’ though he seemed to have more control over it as shown in the finale battle of Nagoya, when he attacks only his enemies and saves Mirai, Kimizuki’s sister. It is said that this power may be called ‘Seraph of the End’ which gives superhuman speed, strength, reflexes and flight. He is called “The King of Salt” after gaining a new ability in the season finale; the ability to control salt, turn people and ‘Horsemen of John’ into salt and create weapons with salt. Three months after the Battle in Nagoya and Yuichiro along with his comrades quit the Moon Demon Company, they were on the run from both the vampires and the humans but due to his change into the ‘Seraph of the End’ and Asuramaru’s help in suppressing it in the Battle in Nagoya. He later becomes a Namanari after removing the curses restricting Asuramaru. His demon personality is exceptional vicious, horrible and seductive, and often screams to be freed from his confinement. His friends therefore are diligent on keeping him restrained in this state.
Mikaela Hyakuya is Yuichiro’s best friend and the other survivor of the Hyakuya Orphanage. Mikaela hatched a plan to escape from the vampire capitol with his fellow orphans. The attempt ended in a tragedy and he sacrificed himself in order for Yuichiro to escape from the city of vampires, but then he was saved by Krul and turned into a vampire. For the next four years, he was forced to live with the vampires and in process, learning the truth about the experiments done to him and his fellow Hyakuya orphans by humans, causing him to hate both humans and vampires. He fights to meet Yuichiro and rescue him from the humans who are manipulating and experimenting on him and from the vampires who wish to enslave humans Refusing to drink human blood, Mikaela drinks from Krul’s blood instead and thus is not a complete vampire yet. He and Yuichiro care deeply about each other. In the battle of Nagoya, he drinks Yuichiro’s blood, with the latter’s consent and urging, causing him to turn into a complete vampire.
Shinoa Hiragi is the main heroine of the story. She is Guren’s sergeant and squad leader of the Shinoa Squad of the Moon Demon Company. She was sent by Guren in the beginning of the story to watch Yuichiro when he was tasked with making friends. She is sarcastic and enjoys teasing others, especially Yuichiro. Shinoa able to resist any demon she comes into contact with, due to the lack of desire in her heart. Her sister Mahiru Hiragi developed the Cursed Gear and she was her messenger. Despite being part of the Hiragi family, she is uninterested in their power struggle, and was constantly outdone by her older siblings. Additionally, she is loyal to Guren and later develops feelings for Yuichiro. Her Cursed Weapon is Shikama Doji, a manifestation-type demon weapon which takes the form of a large scythe, but can be condensed into a pen-like object.
Krul Tepes is the vampire queen of Japan. She resides in the Third Capitol of the vampires Sanguinem, and also is the Third Progenitor, making her the strongest vampire in Japan. Four years before, she saved Mikaela and turned him into a vampire. She collaborated with Mahiru about Seraph of the End, and was the one who turned her into a vampire. In her human life, she and her brother Ashera were children of a noble family who were attacked by an angry mob, killing her mother and setting her home afire. She and her brother survived but were then beaten and sold into slavery. Making her hate humans. But deep down, she also resents being a vampire, and the First Progenitor for turning her into one.
Now…I will move on to the summary recap of the anime Seraph of End: Vampire Reign …
The story first begins in 2012, the world supposedly comes to an end because of a “human-made” virus, ravaging the global population and leaving only children under the age of thirteen untouched. It is around this time that vampires arise from the recesses of the earth, likely followed by age-old fears of the dark thought only to be myth. The vampires sweep the earth and claim it in a single violent stroke, conquering the remnants of humanity and leading them beneath the surface to safety. This “protection” comes at the price of “donating” blood to their captors, not knowing that they are vampires. At the age of twelve, Yuichiro and his friend and fellow orphan Mikaela planned to escape along with the children in Hyakuya Orphanage. However, this resulted in their deaths and Mikaela sacrifices himself in order for Yuichiro to escape and be saved by members of the Moon Demon Company, an extermination unit of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Four years later, Yuichiro devotes his life to destroy vampires and seek revenge against them for murdering his “family.” At the same time, it is revealed that Mikaela is still alive and wants to find his friend, Yuichiro. This leads to the true start of Yuichiro’s and Mikaela’s story in the Seraph of End: Vampire Reign…
Finally, I know this will be short but I will talk about thoughts and overall review on the anime Seraph of End: Vampire Reign …
Overall, I thought this anime is was undeniable amazing! I loved it!
Don’t get me wrong there were some slow parts but those parts are important especially if you want to know what the Seraph of End really is and what experiments had the vampires done to Yuichiro and Mikaela.
I certainly loved the character developments and backgrounds for all the characters. I find it fascinating! I most particularly was interested in Krul Tepes and her backstory! You can stay she is my favorite character in Seraph of End, due to her being such a complex character with a complex deep backstory! As mentioned earlier in the character descriptions, she was originally a human born from a noble family and has a brother. But then her family was attacked by an angry mob, killing her mother and setting her home afire. She and her brother survived but were then beaten and sold into slavery. Making her hate humans. She and her brother were then “saved” and turned by the First Progenitor, and were soon separated. Thus, making her hate vampires as well. Also another tidbit that I found interesting is that in a way Krul Tepes was named after Vlad the Impaler aka Vlad Tepes, the Romanian hero noble who Bram Stoker’s based his vampire fantasy Dracula on.
Anyways I thoroughly enjoyed this anime and can’t wait til the animators decide to continue on with another season because it is totally amazing! The story, the graphics, the characters both good and bad, and the action!
