Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms Chinese Drama Review

This is one of the most beautiful, long, epic Chinese fantasy drama series I’ve ever watch that I got to make a drama review for it. This drama came out early 2017 and had about 58 episodes in all! But despite it being so long it is such a beautiful drama and I highly recommend it and this review will express why.

Anyways presenting…

Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms Chinese Drama Review

Disclaimer: Picture of the tv series and Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and cast, are definitely not mine. And just add… info of the cast I got from Wikipedia, MyDramaList and Asian wiki.✌️

And to add to that… This show can be watched both on Netflix and Viki.com!

First off, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film and television… at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this tv drama review as tv lover and book lover… cause this tv drama is an adaptation of a Chinese novel. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Just a tidbit, Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms is based on a novel of the same name called Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms by Tan Qi Gong Zi…which will be…hopefully be followed by Three Lives, Three Worlds, Pillow Book as the tv sequel… But more on that later…

Oh… by the way, there is an English translation version of the novel called To the Sky Kingdom!

Anyways…here it is goes…

I will start first by talking about the main leads Yang Mi, Mark Chao, Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao…

Yang Mi is a popular Chinese actress and singer, who made her acting debut is historical television series Tang Ming Huang.  She later received recognition for her leading roles in various television series such as 2007’s Wang Zhaojun, 2009’s Chinese Paladin 3, 2011’s Palace, 2012’s Beijing Love Story,  2014’s Swords of Legends, 2016’s The Interpreter, what this review is focused on 2017’s Eternal Love Ten Miles of Peace Blossoms,  and her most recent 2018’s The Legend of Fuyao. She also received recognition for her leading roles in various films as well…such as 2011’s Mysterious Island, 2013-2015’s Tiny Times and 2015’s The Witness. She won Best Actress Award in 2017 at the WorldFest Houston International Festival for her performance in Reset. She was also chosen as one of the New Four Dan Actresses by Southern Metropolis Daily.

In Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, Yang Mi plays role of Bai Qian, Si Yin and Su Su.

As Bai Qian, she is the youngest child and only daughter of the Fox King. Bai Qian a well-respected High Goddess in the heavenly realm, worshipped for her beauty and is the current female monarch of Qing Qiu. She had her memories wiped out twice…1st time unwillingly and the 2nd time willingly.  The 1st time was after sealing in Qing Cang in the Dong Huang Bell having known from her Master that every 70,000, Qing Cang will break out of being sealed in the Dong Huang Bell years after Mo Yuan lost his soul, so every 70,000 years someone has to re-seal Qing Cang in the bell. And being the only one who holds that knowledge, Bai Qian re-seals Qing Cang resulting in her memories and goddess essence to be sealed away. The 2nd time she loses her memories, was after she experience a heavy trial as the mortal Su Su where she committed suicide by jumping off the Zhu Xian Terrace…Bai Qian returns to her goddess identity and her memories sealed by Qing Cang are unsealed. Thus, with the flood of memories as a disciple, most especially as mortal… Bai Qian cannot deal with the trauma of her memories as a mortal, so she drank a potion because she wanted to forget the pain she experienced as her time as the mortal Su Su when Ye Hua broke her heart which was  due to misunderstanding caused by other forces as well as Ye Hua’s belief that by being indifferent from her he is saving her. So, with no memories of her time as Su Su, 300 years later she meets Ye Hua who realizes she is indeed Su Su his lost beloved and he tries to get her to love him again.

As Si Yin, as Bai Qian’s Alias as the disciple of Mo Yuan, the God of War on Kunlun Mountain and the master and owner of the heavenly weapon / artifact the Fan of Yuqingkunlun. As a disciple, she fell with love with the Ghost Lord Qing Cang’s 2nd second son, the second prince Li Jing and was later betrayed by him and the Xuan Nu, who was given permission from Bai Qian back in their younger days to be able to use Bai Qian’s face, due to Xuan Nu’s high insecurities.  Bai Qian also developed a deep bond with Mo Yuan as his disciple and tried many methods to bring him back to life after Mo Yuan’s soul was destroyed during the devastating war between Heaven and the Ghost Tribe when Mo Yuan sealed Qing Cang in the Dong Huang Bell.  As Mo Yuan’s favorite disciple, she is also the only one who knows use, pros and cons of the Dong Huang Bell.

While as Su Su, who is Bai Qian’s mortal identity after her powers and memories were unwillingly sealed by Qing Cang after she successfully re-seals Qing Cang in the Dong Huang Bell. She in her mortal form, unknowingly fell in love with Ye Hua, the Crown Prince of Heaven, marries him and gives birth to their son, A-Li.  But when she was forcefully taken to live in Heaven, the misunderstandings occurred in their relationship which includes Su-jin, the jealous assigned concubine selected by the Heavenly Lord for Ye Hua as well as the people of the Heaven clan’s abhorrence toward mortals and Ye Hua believing his indifference to her will protect her. Instead, it leads to her committing suicide by jumping off the Zhu Xian terrace, unknowingly knowing that destroys any mortal soul the jumps off, since she believes that Ye Hua betrayed her after taking her sight away thinking he believed false accusations about her.  Since she was not really a mortal, her soul was not destroyed…instead she returned to her goddess identity and all her memories are unsealed.

His personality changed and became more exuberant when he met and fell in love with Su Su during his trip to the mortal world.  When Su Su was forced to live in the Nine Heavens, Ye Hua appeared cold to her in front of company to hide their relationship, believing it was his only way to protect her, thus leading to misunderstandings between them.

Moving on now…

A slight recap of beginning and then my review…

Right of the bat in, it begins in a majestic mythical land Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses at the base of Kunlun Mountain and its Master, Mo Yuan the undefeatable God of War, who is the eldest son of the Heavenly Father. The High God Zhe Yan, the Phoenix immortal brings with the youngest child and only daughter on the Fox Clan, Bai Qian with him to become a disciple of Mo Yuan.

Bai Qian was a playful young woman who always causes trouble, so her parents the Fox King and the Fox Queen asked the Phoenix High God Zhe Yan to turn her into a boy and train on Kunlun Mountain. And with luck would have it despite seeing through Zhe Yan’s magic that Bai Qian, without knowing that Mo Yuan already knows that she is in fact a girl, Mo Yan accepted her as his Seventeenth discipline and was called Si Yin Shenjun especially since the powerful heavenly weapon / artifact the Fan of Yuqingkunlun chose her to be its master.

From then on was Bai Qian journey as the God of War Mo Yan’s disciple Si Yin Shenjun, Seventeen….

Years past…And Bai Qian as Si Yin, Seventeen, still remains a little naughty, causes trouble but is considered as Mo Yan’s favorite disciple as well as still not knowing that Mo Yan’s knows she is in fact a woman.

One day, Si Yin / Seventeen / Bai Qian gets kidnapped by the goddess Yao Guang who lives near Kunlun Mountain.  Yao Guang kidnaps Si Yin because she wants to turn Si Yin into her disciple as well as to make Mo Yuan like her… But that backfires on her.  Around that same time. Si Yin / Bai Qian’s childhood friend Xuan Nu whom she allows to use her face, comes to her not knowing she is in fact Bai Qian and not a guy with a letter from her 4th brother, informing Si Yin that she ran away from home because she didn’t want to marry a bear prince.

Soon after, news of the birth of her niece reached her so Si Yin / Seventeen / Bai Qian with the assistance of her 9th brother another disciple of Mo Yuan travel to Qing Qiu between its borders and the the Ghost Tribe.  But they run into rebels of the Ghost Tribe as well as the Ghost Lord Qing Cang and his group who are in fact have plans to going against the Heavenly Tribe and decided to kidnapped 17th and 9th to humiliate Kunlun Mountain cause a war. Instead Mo Yuan saves 17th and 9th, with the assistance of 2nd Prince of Ghost Tribe, Li Jing, who had fallen in love with 17th and at the first meeting knew 17th is in fact a woman, but still not knowing Si Yin is really Bai Qian, the future queen of Qing Qiu

Since Li Jing was banished from the Ghost Tribe, he took in as an opportunity to woo Si Yin while spending them with Si Yin and Xuan Nu. Xuan Nu on the other hand, who was rejected by Die Fang, who is Si Yin’s eldest brother as well as another disciple of Mo Yuan, decides to set her focus on Li Jing… jealous by his attentions toward Si Yin, she seduces Li Jing thus leading to the end of Li Jing and Si Yin’s relationship and them being kicked out of Kunlun mountain.  She and Li Jjing were then brought to the Ghost Tribe to be killed but she told them that Li Jing only betrayed them to gain Si Yin’s trust so he can enter Kunlun.  But on Li Jing’s and Xuan Nu’s wedding day, they were both beaten up by the Ghost Tribe and Xuan Nu was sent back beaten to Kunlun to anger Kunlun. Even though Xuan Nu was beaten, Die Fang still treats her like a sister while Si Yin refuses to forgive her right away for her betrayal, that Xuan Nu decides to do the ultimate betrayal against the Heaven Clan and give away the tactical map of Kunlun to the Ghost Tribe, which will lead to the deaths of many in the war between the Heaven Clan and the Ghost Tribe.

In order to win the war, Mo Yuan sacrifices his soul to seal Qing Cang in the Dong Huang Bell.  And in order for Mo Yuan body to not be destroyed and sealed away since Mo Yuan told Si Yin he will come back, Si Yi steals Mo Yuan’s body and hides it in Qing Qiu. It is forever noted, in Heaven Clan’s history that Mo Yuan and Si Yin disappeared and is on-going unsolved case. While in Qing Qiu, the Fox Clan’s royal family…Bai Qian’s family and the Phoenix Lord Zhe Yan are aware the Si Yin is Bai Qian and that Mo Yuan’s body is kept in the Yanhua Cave, which has powers to mythically preserve a blood. And as a part of Bai Qian’s life debt to Mo Yuan for him taking her place in take the lightning strikes that led to her ascension to goddess and for being a nine tails…she feeds Mo Yuan’s body with blood from her heart to somehow help Mo Yuan piece together his soul even though she doesn’t know if his soul will even be pieced together at all.

70,000 years passed since Mo Yuan lost his soul while sealing in Qing Cang in the Dong Huang Bell,  Bai Qian is considered as a recluse always staying in Qing Qiu, mostly to avoid people including her fellow disciples and allies during the war between Heavenly Clan and Ghost Clan which lead to Mo Yuan’s passing. Bai Qian even avoided her fiancé 2nd prince of the Heaven, Sang Ji because he already met her as Si Yin… So, because of her avoidance of Sang Ji, he ends up fallen in love with her white snake spirit service thus leading to the breaking of their engagement, her ridicule and her being engagement to the indifferent Crown Prince Ye Hua instead. Despite that…Bai Qian mostly cares about making sure Qing Cang doesn’t break out of the Dong Huang Bell and when the seal of it weakens, she will re-seal right away. The spell of sealing the Dong Huang Bell expires every 70,000 years, so when the moment came Bai Qian reseals Qing Qiu in the Dong Huang Bell, but does not survive unscathed…Qing Cang seals away Bai Qian’s immortality and her memories…which leads to her life as a mortal and meeting Ye Hua who falls in love her, marries her and having a child together…

From there it led to misunderstandings to between them that lead to her “death” as a mortal to her returning to her goddess form as well as the return of her memories. But her memories and her heartbreak as mortal causes her to want to drink the forgetfulness potion, leading her to not to remember her memories as a mortal.

And thus, as gods…300 years later…Bai Qian and Ye Hua meet again with Bai Qian both indifferent and have no memories of Ye Hua, that Ye Hua does everything he can to get her to love him again.  This is where the story continues on but their true start as who they really are….

Moving on…

Overall… I love this Chinese Drama! I can definitely say that it is one of the best fantasy historical dramas I’ve ever seen!

Only thing is…it is very long…like I mentioned before…about 58 episodes in all! But I thoroughly enjoyed it…

Even if the lighting of the scenes is at the brighter side, the costuming and cinematography is undeniably beautiful. The scenes are vivid and picturesque.

I don’t want to reveal too much even though I likely did reveal more than enough in the character descriptions as well as the summary but there is a lot more I did not talk about!

The story is so intricate but very well developed.  There is a lot of drama, yes, and crazy messed of people or crazy female characters like Xuan Nu and the jealous assigned concubine Su-jin… But I got to say, the respective actresses who played these two female characters did an awesome job, because I despise them, yet I also pitied them because they had so many insecurities which lead them to become very obsessive and be bad or evil. These ladies might be pitied for their insecurities, but they still did bad things, and they got their karma… All I can say without saying too much but they definitely express that “Beauty is the  eye of the beholder”, cause to me they may be beautiful on the outside but their actions and personalities screams the opposite!

Another thing I like is the dynamics and flow of each world or tribe in the story. How they interact with one another or within itself…whether be the people of the mortal realm and the people of the Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses which are the Heavenly Clan, the Ghost Clan, the Fox Clan, and the disciples of the Kunlun Mountain. Not sure if I can describe this well but It’s interesting how their actions or dealings with one another can affect the others’ lives. I also like how the differences in time between both the mortal realm and the Four Seas & Eight Wildernesses still coincides with one another.

I loved all the characters in this drama…from the main to the supporting to the minor characters… Whether or not, they are the protagonists or the antagonists, allies or enemies. But of course, it is the main characters whom I am really looking forward to seeing in the drama and they are Bai Qian, Ye Hua, Bai Fengjiu and Dong Hua who are respectively played by Yang Mi, Mark Chao, Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao! Anyways the main characters you can’t help but love them and get immersed in their stories as well as their love lives. LOL. The main cast or actors who played them were undeniably amazing in their respective roles and talented. The chemistry between Yang Mi and Mark Chao as well as Dilraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao is beautiful! A perfect mix of romantic, adorable and sexy!  Their stories gets you through a rollercoaster of emotions as you get immersed in them.

Anyways, like I said before Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms is one of the best fantasy historical dramas I’ve ever seen! And it is a definite must watch!!!

Because of this, my curiosity for the novel grew and luckily there is an English translation version of the novel called To the Sky Kingdom! So, I will definitely check it out one day as well.

But anyways I know it is a long drama and it is up to you guys if you want to check out and give Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms a chance… But either way this drama is high in my highly recommend list!

So it you want to check out Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, go for it!!!

By the way, an interesting tidbit, the Sequel to Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms is coming and it’s going to be focused on the 2nd main pair Bai Fengjiu and Dong Hua, respectively played by Diraba Dilmurat and Vengo Gao is in the works and probably will come out soon…sometime next year 2020…hopefully… I am so excited! Love this pair! Anyways, the title of the sequel is going to called Eternal Love 2: Three Lives, Three Worlds, The Pillow Book ! And I am stoked!!!

Anyways…
