Re Zero: Starting a New Life in Another World Anime Review
First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this review as an anime lover…. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.
Moving on… I will first talk about the main characters of the anime Re Zero: Starting a New Life in Another World … Subaru Natsuki, Emilia, Puck, Rem, Ram & Beatrice…
Subara Natsuki is the main protagonist of the Re Zero. He is 17-year-old hikikomori and gamer who suddenly finds himself brought to another world while he was his way home from the convenience store. In this other world, he meets a silver-haired half-elf girl named Emilia, and falls deeply in love with her. Also, in this new world, he gets the ability that allows him to go back in time when he dies, while still keeping his memories of the previous timeline called “Return by Death”. He cannot tell anyone about this ability, because any attempt to do so causes him to black out and unseen hands appear to squeeze his heart, and may even kill those around him. It also causes him to give off the “scent of the Jealous Witch”, which attracts “mabeasts” (magical creatures), and not only that…it is disgusting to those who can sense it…like for example Beatrice. Despite being the most normal being in this other world, Subaru does work out occasionally and seems to know basic hand-to-hand combat, making him not entirely powerless and defenseless. He also shows some capacity for Yin magic, but only at a very basic level. In Arc 3, he officially receives a black ground dragon named Patrasche as his personal steed. In Arc 4 of the web novel, along with entering a contract with Beatrice, Subaru also learns parkour and the use of whips as a weapon for several months, making him stronger. As of the end of Arc 4, Subaru officially becomes Emilia’s knight.
Emilia is the main heroine of Re Zero. She is a silver-haired half-elf girl and a Spirit Art User. She is one of the contenders to become the next ruler in the royal election, making her 42nd King of Lugunica. Subaru first meets her when her insignia, which she needs to possess in order to be qualified to participate in the election, was stolen by Felt. She is from the Frozen Forest, and is over a hundred years old (although most of the time she was frozen in the forest). Her mental state is still that of a teenager. The name Emilia first used when introducing herself to Subaru, “Satella”, is also the name of the “Jealous Witch”, whose appearance is said to bear a resemblance to her and is responsible for the judgment against half-elves. Among the half breeds and other discriminated or alienated races and people in Lugunica, she is seen as their hope for a better future due to her ideal of democracy and better social equality. Because of her birthright and resemblance to Satella, however, Emilia is often ignored and hated by most people, leaving her lonely and without any friends prior to meeting Subaru. Initially, she regards Subaru as a playful child that needs to be taken care of. After he risks his life to save her from the Witch’s Cult, however, Emilia starts to grow deep feelings for him, as Subaru is the first person to ever make her feel truly happy, accepted and loved.
Puck is Emilia’s familiar and a spirit in the form of a cat. His work time is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., similar to a salaryman’s. He has an empathic ability that allows him to read people’s minds through their emotions/intent. Should Emilia ever die, Puck turns into a huge beast intent on destroying the world, since Emilia, the purpose of his existence, is gone. His true identity is that of “Beast of the End of the Eternally Frozen Lands”, one of 4 Great Spirits of the world who can control heat.
Rem is one of the twin demons who work at Roswaal’s mansion as maids, Rem is Ram’s younger sister. She has blue hair which she wears parted on the left, and still has a full horn, which grants her magical power. She does work at the mansion, although her ability to cook is better than her sister. She used to have an inferiority complex towards her sister. Having a strong hatred for the Witch’s Cult, Rem initially accused Subaru for having the Witch’s scent, that resulted in her killing him twice. After Subaru saves her from the mabeasts of Elior Forest, becoming her “hero”, Rem discards her doubts and falls deeply in love with him, and even when he turns her down for Emilia, she still becomes one of his most loyal followers. An extra story in Arc 3 of the novel tells a “What If” story about what could’ve happened if Subaru and Rem had decided to run away instead; they lived happily ever after with two children.
Ram is a demon and Rem’s older twin sister. She has pink hair which she wears parted on the right. Together, they often make sarcastic remarks towards Subaru. Ram always calls Subaru “Barusu”, and rarely shows any respect for him. Despite twins being forbidden in their clan, the two were safe due to Ram being a prodigy at a young age. She lost her powers after her horn was cut off during the attack on their village by the Witch’s Cult. Outside of magic, Ram only excels Rem in cleaning, whereas Rem is far superior to Ram in almost all other tasks, contrary to Rem’s endless admiration. Ever since losing her horn, her body has become very weak with low stamina and magic powers. It is shown that master Roswell helps heal her daily.
Beatrice is a mysterious mage who was contracted by Roswaal to keep his ancient magical books safe in his massive library. She has the ability to warp any room in the mansion to this library whenever she chooses, but can’t completely leave the mansion. She tends to suffix many of her sentences with “I suppose”, and has a deep fondness for Puck. Despite her cold behavior and verbal abuse towards Subaru, because of his ability to easily guess where she is located and tendency to barge into the library without asking, Beatrice can’t stand if people are hurt in front of her and becomes one of the people that Subaru can trust. During Arc 4 of the web novel, she is revealed to be an artificial spirit and forms a contract with Subaru at the end. She is about four hundred years old.
Now…I will move on to the summary recap of the anime Re Zero: Starting a New Life in Another World …well for the first season…
The story first begins with Subara, a hikikomori who does nothing but play games. One night, after visiting a convenience store, he is suddenly brought to another world. With no sign of who summoned him, he soon assists a silver-haired half-elf girl who presents herself as “Satella”, and her familiar Puck. “Satella” tells Subara that her insignia was stolen by a thief named Felt. When he and Satella are mysteriously killed, Subaru wakes and realizes that he has developed the ability “Return by Death,” allowing him to reverse time by dying. He greets Satella again, only for her to be insulted at being called by the name “Satella,” which in fact refers to the “Jealous Witch,” and is considered a taboo and “Satella” doesn’t tell Subara her real name because of that. With the help of Reinhard (a knight) in another timeline, Subaru saves “Satella’s” life from the assassin Elsa, a sadistic assassin trying to claim the insignia for whoever hired her. As Subara’s wish as reward for saving her life, “Satella” reveals that her real name is Emilia, and as a token of gratitude, Felt also returns the insignia to Emilia.
While recovering at the margrave Roswaal’s mansion, the mage Beatrice drains Subaru’s mana. After waking up, he meets the twin maids Ram and Rem, as well as Roswaal, who hires him as a butler. Roswaal tells him that Emilia needs the insignia to qualify as a contender in the upcoming royal election. After mysteriously dying again, Subaru decides to investigate the events leading to his death, and tries to reconstruct these events. Following a series of disturbing deaths and revivals, he finally learns that a curse had been placed on him, then he deduces it came from a village he had visited earlier, while also resolving Rem’s intense hatred for witches. Eventually, the village is threatened by creatures known as mabeasts, demonic beasts that are rumored to have been created by a witch to wipe out humankind, so Subaru, Rem and Ram have to rescue the villagers.
Later, Emilia is summoned to the capital by two members of the Crusch’s Camp, Wilhelm and Felix who is also a part of the Royal Guard for the start of the royal selection. There, Subaru and company meet the other royal candidates: Priscilla, Crusch, Anastasia and Felt; and their knights, Aldebaran, Julius, and Reinhard. Felt at first announces that she will not participate in the election, and Subaru declares himself to be Emilia’s knight. Following a public fight which leaves Subaru badly injured, he gets into a huge argument with Emilia, who decides to cut ties with Subaru, thus leaving him behind.
After recovering, Subaru decides to train under Wilhelm, while Felix advises him to make up with Emilia. Rem then warns Subaru that something is occurring at the mansion, and against Crusch and Felix’s warning, Subaru decides to return to the mansion. There, he discovers many dead bodies, including that of Rem, much to his horror. After dying and respawning, he is ambushed by a wicked group known as the Witch’s Cult and meets the insane leader, Petelgeuse, who then tortures and kills Rem. Having later been killed by a monstrous Puck, Subaru respawns and curses Petelgeuse.
Knowing that the mansion and village will be attacked, Subaru seeks help from the other royal candidates, but they all decline. While gathering an evacuation, he encounters a legendary mabeast called the White Whale. Rem sacrifices herself to let Subaru to escape. After returning to the mansion, Subaru encounters Ram and Emilia, who have no memory of Rem. Disturbed by the situation, Subaru reveals his “Return by Death” ability to Emilia, only for her to die afterward. Puck, enraged, transforms and kills Petelgeuse and his cult, then freezes Subaru to death as punishment for Emilia’s death. After respawning, Subaru, fallen into despair and has a serious conversation with Rem, asking her to run away with him. Rem, however, strongly encourages Subaru not to give up and confesses her love for him, already knowing that his heart is for Emilia. With newfound resolve, Subaru then decides that he will start again from zero.
Subaru and Rem later battle against the White Whale, after successfully striking an alliance with Crusch and Anastasia’s camps. Following a long and hard-fought battle, Wilhelm ultimately kills the White Whale, thus avenging the death of his wife. Eventually, with the help of his new allies, Subaru is finally able to defeat Petelgeuse and his cult, saving the lives of Emilia and the villagers. Having reconciled with Emilia, Subaru confesses his love for her, leading Emilia to tearfully thank Subaru for saving her.
Thus the end of season one…
I know this will be short but I will finally talk about thoughts and overall review on the anime Re Zero: Starting a New Life in Another World…
Overall, I thought this anime is awesome! It is definitely one of my favorite animes ever!!!
I enjoyed all the characters. I love the dynamics between the characters like Subara-Emilia, Subara-Rem, Rem-Ram, Emilia-Puck, Puck-Subara, Beatrice-Subara, and Beatrice-Puck. But amongst my favorites characters are Puck, Emilia and Beatrice. In my opinion, they are weirdly interesting and the most relatable to me.
This anime kind of has a slow start in the 1st episode, but I found it interesting all the same and you won’t understand anything or missed vital parts if you skip that episode. You can’t help but feel frustrated with and along with Subara too every he dies!
I will admit the first time I watch this and he kept dying I got so frustrated and skipped some scenes, I then realized that is not good idea and went back to the very beginning because I realized I skipped important parts even though I was enjoying it despite the frustration. This was mainly my dilemma in the first two episodes. So, I got a hold of myself especially since I really like this anime and watched thoroughly and learned to embrace not only his frustration but my frustration as well especially over Subara’s repeated deaths. This is because on every death Subara learns something new to help get through the dilemma till he can fully survive and get pass that dilemma with all whom he cares about surviving as well.
Anyways I was frustrated at first, mainly in the first two episodes… but there is no denying that I enjoyed and come to love this anime thoroughly especially since I watched it multiple times already! That is because this anime is unique. In a way, on my path towards loving and enjoying this anime, I realized that because as you think about it more, Subara as a gamer is now living in other world that is like a living game for him except his actual life is on the line and unlike in a game he plays he has unlimited deaths to start over at a safe point like in an actual game but instead it is in real life for him but in another world. This concept is what makes this anime, Re Zero: Starting a New Life in Another World undeniable unique.
Anyways I thoroughly enjoyed to anime and I can’t wait for more after this first season. I heard that a second works and it is likely to come out soon! Yehey!!!
