Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Anime Review

First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this review as an anime lover…. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Anyways…

Moving on… I will first talk about the main characters of the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba …    … Tanjirō Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, Inosuke Hashibira, Genya Shinazugawa and Kanao Tsuyuri…

Tanjirō Kamado is the main protagonist amd the oldest son of a charcoal-seller. His entire family was slaughtered by a demon while he was out selling charcoal, with only his sister Nezuko surviving the massacre but not without bad news…she has now become a demon. Because of what happen to his family and Nezuko, he decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps.  His goal is to find a cure for her and turn her back into a human. He originally trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, learning the “Water Breathing” sword-style, but later he began to use his family’s Hinokami Kagura “Dance of the Sun God” technique, merging both to create a more sustainable fighting style. His skull is extremely thick and his headbutts are often used as gags throughout the series. He is a kind-hearted boy and often feels sympathy for demons and their victims. His endless optimism and simple nature often has people enjoy his company, but at the same time, it also puts him at odds with certain characters. He has a heightened sense of smell which allows him to track down demons and evade their attacks. His sword’s color is black, occasionally turning crimson red when combined with Nezuko’s Blood Burst.

Nezuko Kamado is the daughter of a charcoal-seller and Tanjiro’s younger sister. She was with her family when they were attacked and killed by a demon. She was the only one that survived, but the attack turned her into a demon. However, unlike many newborn demons, she managed to maintain some form of humanity, which allowed her to recognize Tanjiro as her brother and not hurt him. By the effect of Urokodaki’s hypnosis, Nezuko starts seeing other humans as the deceased members of her family, prompting her to protect them against other demons. Instead of eating human flesh, she regains energy from sleep and tends to become unconscious for long periods of time after overexerting herself. She is unable to speak and was also made to wear a bamboo gag as a precaution from biting anyone. She has several powers, including regeneration, superhuman strength, growing and shrinking rapidly and a blood demon technique called “Blood Burst” that causes her blood that is outside her body to burn. Tanjiro carries her around in a wooden box, since being in the sun would cause her to burn up, until she becomes able to withstand it, thus becoming the main target of Muzan and his demons.

Zenitsu Agatsuma is a cowardly boy who was forced to join the Demon Slayer Corps at around the same time as Tanjiro to pay for his debts. He trained in the “Thunder Breathing” style by the former Thunder Hashira, but was only able to learn the first technique, and because of this he often demeans himself, despite the fact that he is talented. He joins up with Tanjiro on a mission and since then, he has tagged along with him, partially out of his crush on Nezuko, but also due to knowing how honest and kind he is. His cowardly personality initially deters him and he is only able to fight when he is unconscious or asleep, but he later learns to push his fears aside and take action to the point of developing a new, high-class thunder technique. His sword’s color is gold. He has a heightened sense of hearing which allows him to distinguish a person’s true character by the sound of their heartbeat.

Inosuke Hashibira is a young boy who was raised by a wild boar. He uses a self-taught style called “Beast Breathing” along with two serrated swords in battle. When he gets new swords, he purposely makes them serrated in order to match his taste and fighting style thus making the swordsmith angry. He is rash and prone to reacting violently, and while he appears slow, he has proven himself in battle time after time. He is extremely muscular and rugged, which contrasts with his oddly effeminate face, which he normally hides under a boar’s head. When he first meets Tanjiro, he treats him as an enemy, but they quickly become friends as they fight together. He often challenges Tanjiro to competitions which are accepted in good-spirit. He took the test at the same time as Tanjiro and Zenitsu, and was apparently the first to clear it. His swords are colored blue-grey and makes use of his heightened sense of touch to detect enemies from afar.

Genya Shinazugawa is a Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro and Zenitsu. He is a harsh and foul-mouthed individual obsessed with nothing beyond demon killing. His personality later changes after he fights beside Tanjiro to save the Hidden Swordsmith Village. Unlike most other Demon Slayers, he is unable to use Breaths or most sword fighting styles. Instead, he eats parts of the demons he fights, and through his special digestive system, he briefly gains demonic powers. His powers can be greater depending on the strength and the amount of the demon he eats. When he eats part of a demon, he is also prone to a demon’s weaknesses. He also carries a gun which shoots specialized bullets that are made of the same material as the Demon Slayers’ Nichirin swords. He is the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the current Wind Hashira, who always avoids him, unaware that his older brother wants him to have a normal life. Genya is mortally wounded while assisting the Hashira against Kokushibo, reconciling with his brother before passing away.

Kanao Tsuyuri is a Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Genya, Kanao Tsuyuri is the protogé of Shinobu Kochō, the current Insect Hashira, and is being trained as a Tsuguko, or successor to the Hashira. She uses the “Flower Breathing” style and is a highly skilled fighter, but has difficulty working without being directly told what to do. She grew up in a poor, abusive household and was sold as a slave, leading her to shut off her emotions as a way to survive. Even after being rescued and taken in by Shinobu and Kanae, she would never do anything unless ordered, so Kanae gave her a coin for her to flip whenever she has trouble making decisions. She relies heavily on her coin flipping to make decisions until Tanjiro becomes friendly with her, which convinces her to use the coin less often. Her sword’s color is pink and her heightened sense of sight allows her to easily dodge enemy attacks while looking for openings, but she strains herself by overusing this ability during her fight with Doma, to the point of becoming blind in one eye.

Now…I will move on to the summary recap of the beginning of  anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba …

The story of this anime begins in Taisho-era Japan….  Tanjirō Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family…the eldest son of ac harcoal-seller. He has become his family’s sole source of income after the passing of his father.

But then everything changes, while he was away selling charcoal… His family was attacked and slaughtered by a demon.  When he arrived finding that besides himself, his younger sister Nezuko although wounded and bloodied…she survived…. While carrying her to get her somewhere to be treated, she turned into a demon due to her wounds…and she attacks him and nearly kills him but stopped once she recognized him.  She especially surprised Giyu Tomioka a demon slayer who nearly killed slaughtered her while trying to save Tanjirō from her as well as her brother Tanjirō was fighting Giyu and trying to save Nezuko from Giyu at the same time. for showing signs of humanity and recognizing Tanjirō as her brother. She surprised Giyu showing signs of human emotion and thought, which is not possible for demons. She kept herself from eating Tanjiro especially, which would make her turn into a full demon.

And after a brief fight Giyu Tomioka a demon slayer, Tanjirō while protecting his sister who was protecting him too after recognizing him after being turned into a demon. After knocking Nezuko out but letting her live after showing signs of humanity, Giyu enlists Tanjirō to become a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and take revenge for the deaths of the rest of his family. Giyu also directs him to find under Sakonji Urokodaki, who will train him in learning the “Water Breathing” sword-style before he has to go take the demon slayer test.  He was also trained by two mysterious figures who was once trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, because of them Tanjirō was able to break a huge heavy boulder with his “Water Breathing” sword-style. After learning the sword-style, Sakonji Urokodaki, makes him promise to come back to his mountain. Sakonji Urokodaki  also promises Tanjirō that Nezuko, who is still sleeping will be safe with him and he will protect her while he is gone for his demon slayer test.

After making the promise,  Tanjirō participates in a demon slayer test in which he and many other demon trainee under different training masters respected by a specific masks they carry or wear, are locked within a barrier that has captured demons as part of training test.  He must survive after a couple days in that barrier in order to become a full fledge demon slayer corps member. During the test, Tanjirō runs into the long-surviving demon that consumed numerous demon trainees especially trainees trained by Urokodaki since carry with them a certain masks that marks them as trained Sakonji Urokodaki… This long surviving demon, is unheard of within the training barrier and has a major grudge against Sakonji Urokodaki for capturing him so many years ago and cause of that he finds satisfaction is killing demon trainees especially all of Sakonji Urokodaki’s trainees and one day escape that training barrier. During his battle with the long-surviving demon, he learns the two mysterious figures that taught and trained him the to break a huge heavy boulder with his “Water Breathing” sword-style, are actually killed by the demon and their spirits trained him. Their spirits and his previous predecessor’s spirits who were killed by the demon are forever trapped within the barrier cause of the demon being alive that they could not return to Sakonji Urokodaki’s mountain even in spirt. After a long fight, Tanjirō was finally able to destroy the long surviving demon after realizing his neck is like the heavy boulder and uses his most powerful “Water Breathing” sword-style at it all while feeling pity for it, at the same time the spirit of his predecessors as well as they mysterious figures are finally laid to rest and return to Sakonji Urokodaki’s mountain as they promise as well…even if in spirit. Back his mountain, Sakonji Urokodaki felt the spirits of his pass trainees returning to him.

After the demon slayer test within the barrier, only five survived including Tanjirō, who are then appointed as official demon slayers, assigned birds that will inform them of the future mission and get to chose their ore to help create the metal of their specific sword their will help that kill demons as official demon slayers and turns to a certain color depending on the slayer. They are to return home or to the trainers while their wait for their swords and uniforms as demon slayers and then they will receive their mission.

Tanjirō returns to Sakonji Urokodaki, who is happy he is still alive and allows him to enjoy his rest, since once Tanjirō officially gets his sword and uniform he won’t be able to.  The day the swordsmith arrived with Tanjirō’s sword, it turns black and he found out that there is nothing much on black swords.  He then receives, his first orders.  Nezuko has already awoken, and Tanjirō learns from Urokodaki that Nezuko likely sleeps for long periods of them to regain energy since she doesn’t consume human flesh and Urokodaki also hypnotized Nezuko to start seeing other humans as the deceased members of her family, prompting her to protect them against other demons. Urokodaki also creates a special box that is very durable and won’t feel heavy, so Tanjirō can easily carry Nezuko around while they are traveling in the daylight. This will protect Nezuko from the sun so she was burn up and disintegrate.

Once prepared and said his goodbyes to Urokodaki, Tanjirō who is now dressed in his uniform, sword at his side and Nezuko safely tucked away in her special carrying box… Tanjirō now demon slayer begins his quest to help his sister turn human again and take revenge for the deaths of the rest of his family and do his duty as a demon slayer with his sister at his or in the carrying box on his back…

Finally, I know this will be short but I will talk about thoughts and overall review on the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Overall, I thought this anime is awesome! It is definitely one of my favorite animes ever!!!

It has kind of a slow start in the 1st episode, but I found it interesting all the same and you won’t understand anything or would miss vital parts if you skip that episode. The progression of the story was perfect in my opinion, and easy to understand.

I especially love all the characters especially the siblings Tanjirō and Nezuko. Tanjirō, even though his doing what he can to help his sister turn human again and take revenge for the deaths of the rest of his family and do his duty as a demon slayer, he still reminds kind and pure-hearted… He has sympathy to humans and the demons he has to kill.  Nezuko, although she doesn’t speak, it says a lot that despite now being a demon, she recognizes her brother before she goes further in killing him upon her initial turning as a demon. If I understand this part correctly, upon Nezuko recognizing him, it kept her from consuming human flesh, that would have turned her into a complete demon…that would have led to her to be killed because she can’t come back from being a demon after that. It is interesting that she in a sense is a demon but able to keep a part of humanity because of her brother and it says a lot on the fact that she really loves her brother and her family as proven when Urokodaki hypnotized Nezuko to start seeing other humans as the deceased members of her family, instigating her to protect them against other demons. Heck, upon her turning as a demon fledgling, she tries the best she can to protect Tanjirō from Giyu, who at the time was trying to kill her for before she turns into a full demon if she eats human flesh, while Tanjirō also tries his best to protect her from Giyu. There dynamic is just so beautiful, and you can tell it would be so tragic if Tanjirō would one day have no choice but to kill Nezuko when she one day eats human flesh and becomes a complete demon and loses her humanity completely.  So you can’t help but hope they both succeed in their quest.

Anyways, I will not expound anymore so I won’t spoil anything or too much but…

This anime is absolutely amazing and a much watch!!!

I highly recommend it!!!
