The Judgement Thai Drama Review

I hope everyone is doing well and are safe and healthy!

Anyways…

I’ve binge watched this Thai drama this past week… Btw I apologize for being behind schedule on posting my reviews. Especially on this latest one that I just had to touch a little bit more, in order to make sure I give all my thoughts on this because this show is so raw and intense and powerful since the main focus of this drama is sensitive especially in Asian countries… which is centered around Rape…

I want to clarify that I don’t mean any offense with this review, but I truly believe this drama is worth checking out despite this dark, sensitive theme…

So warning…this show is NOT for kids! As well as this review cause of the theme of rape in this drama…

But… I hope with this review, you will give this drama a chance especially if you haven’t watched it yet…

Also… this will be my first ever Thai TV drama review in a while!!! Woohoo !!! Especially in this month of May!!!

Why do I say this is my first Thai Drama review in a while? Well, my other Thai reviews are mainly Tv series and my last Thai drama was Hua Jai Sila and Bai Mai Plid Plew … And I can definitely say even though both are about revenge, the main themes of the stories are different. But like Hua Jai Sila and Bai Mai Plid Plew….

The Judgement is something to look forward too!  Although this time with The Judgement  it is on Truth and Justice…dealing with a traumatic experience as a Victim and being repeatedly judged and scorned as a victim… And people not believing that a victim is a victim…

 Anyways…

You can say I am getting quite into Thai lately especially while I am waiting for some dramas that have my interest on Viki.com…since some are not fully available yet because they are locked…Huhuhu…

Anyways…

Been a long time coming and finally presenting my first ever Thai TV drama Review…

The Judgement Thai Drama Review

Disclaimer: Pictures of the show, cast are not mine. And just add..the info on the cast I got from Wikipedia, DramaList and Asian wiki. ✌️

First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this Thai drama review as a Tv show lover and a Thai drama lover…. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Oooh… Just a slight tidbit… The Judgementcan be found on Netflix!!! Yehey!!!!  It was released for streaming on Netflix back in November 1, 2018.

Anyways…

Back to the main focus… The Judgement Review…

To begin with the review, I will start with the main cast of The Judgement… Mild Lapassalan Jiravechsoontornkul,  Kacha Nontanun Anchuleepradit, Thanabordee Jaiyen, Nara Thepnupa and Mond Tanutchai Vijitvongthong…

Warning some spoilers…read at your own risk…

Mild Lapassalan Jiravechsoontornkul is a popular Thai actress and model. She studied at Chonkanyanukul University. Lapalal work for Broadcast Thai Television.  She first started out in Hormones as Mint. But she is best known for her role as  Maewnam in Ugly Duckling Series: Don’t. In Happy Birthday, Mild plays the role of Thannan, the sister that committed suicide and died 17 years back on the same day her brother was born, and was forever stuck as a ghost in her bedroom until her her younger brother who just turned 17 was given her room as a gift and him being the only one who can see her.

In The Judgement, Mild Lapassalan Jiravechsoontornkul plays the main protagonist…Lookkaew.  She has a father and a stepmother, Buppha, whom she never fully accepted as family yet. Her boyfriend is Aud…whom she likes but who she also isn’t taking seriously yet because of his playboy nature One day, she forgets her cheerleading outfit for her cheerleading audition and asks her father to bring it for her… While her father drives on the way to her…he gets into an incident leading to him ending up in a coma…  Depressed by her father’s state and the tension with her stepmother, who tries to get closer to her…she accepts her boyfriend’s invite to her party… She gets drunk and unconscious… Aud rapes her… Not fully grasping she was raped yet…she avoids, breaks up with Aud and fights to stays away from him relentlessly… Then somebody posts indecent photos of her of the night…whom she believed is Aud’s doing… Thus the start of her harsh judgement by people…

Kacha Nontanun Anchuleepradit is a Thai actor and singer. He played T-Rex, one of the mail leads in the U-Prince Series: The Lovely Geologist.

In The Judgement, Kacha Nontanun Anchuleepradit plays Archawin aka Archa. He greatly admires and is in love with Lookkaew even when she was already with Aud.  He kind of stalks her around.  After Lookkaew’s decent photos came out way before news of Lookkaew’s rape was announced… he became a close ally and friend along with his friend Potae, who greatly admires Som…due to her online stripping. Anyways Archa is always at Lookkaew’s side…especially in finding the identity of the unlikely person whom released indecent photos and video evidence of Lookkaew’s rape to the entire student body… hint hint…betrayal.

Thanabordee Jaiyen is a Thai actor.

In The Judgement, Thanabordee Jaiyen plays Aud. He is the rich boyfriend of Lookkaew and son of a prominent Thai ambassador, whom even since Aud was young took care of everything…legally and illegally…especially bad ways of dealing with anything that will harm his son but most especially…harm his and his wife’s political career.  Aud really likes  Lookkaew and really wants to have her. The thing is she isn’t taking him seriously because he is a playboy and he loves sex. One day…he invites her to loosen up at his party as a way for her to get over and forget his family issues… When Lookkaew got really drunks, he tries to have sex with her and she refuses him twice before falling drunk unconscious.  Aud then rapes her believing that he truly loves her.  He blames the perpetrator of releasing the photos he took of her while raping her as the one who ruined his relationship with her.

Nara Thepnupa is a Thai actress.

In The Judgement, Nara Thepnupa plays Som. She is the daughter of fish ball vendors who are disgusted by her job as a university’s online stripper.  She became an online stripper to help pay off her parents debts which was mainly caused by her greedy mother who always as creditors for a loan. Because on her identity as a girl stripping online, she is labeled with a lot of bad names and the majority of the school stays away from her.  When Lookkaew’s decent photos came out way before news of Lookkaew’s rape was announced… Som was the first one to comfort Lookkaew and had Lookkaew finally realize and accept that she was raped by her boyfriend.  Later, Som gets raped as well by a client who tricked her into coming to eat with him…telling her that she will get the money upstairs from when they had a meal.  She ignores and brushes off her rape…pretending as if it never happened.

Mond Tanutchai Vijitvongthong is a Thai actor, nicknamed Mond.  He is one of the younger brothers of actress Mint Chalida Vijivongthong. He first debuted in 2017’s Water Boyy The Series as a supporting role, which was then followed by his first main role in Fabulous 30 and another main role 2018’s Kiss Me Again and a supporting role in The Judgement.  In 2019, he got the main role in Boy For Rent, which this review is focus on. His most recent project is 2019’s Plara Song Krueng as a supporting role.

In The Judgement, Mond Tanutchai Vijitvongthong plays the dual role of twin teenage boys… Namnhao/Namnuea.  Twins , who although tend to trick girls at parties…mostly due to the eldest twin Namnuea’s influence… Both identical but very different from eachother…personality wise and preferences. Both still very close to the other…although it took a while until Namnuea confronts his brother Namnhao that he knows that Namnhao is gay and would still love and accept him. Anyways,

As Namnuea, he is the playful and masculine twin with a slightly flirtatious side but is understanding and friendly. After his brother’s ordeal…he asks Lookkaew for help. Doesn’t blame Lookkaewand Archa for his brother’s death because he knows their time together was the only time his brother was happy after his ordeal and his disappointment over his parents not accepting him for who he really is…

As Namnhao, he is the timid and shy friendly twin who develops a possible relationship another teenage boy… He was delighted this boy is into him, happy of being himself with and as his relationship develops with the other teenage boy… They went to have fun at a gay bar when they get into a fight…causing Namnhao to remain at the gay bar and get drunk… This leads to him getting gang rape by unidentified males who aren’t caught and through his survival his parents found out not only he was raped but also gay… And his parents weren’t sympathetic and treated him as having a disease… causing him to get even more very depressed leading to his brother asking Lookkaew for help… Only other time he became happy was hanging out with Lookkaew, his brother Namnuea and Archa…  But despite his happiness after his ordeal…he felt that he wasn’t strong enough dealing with his issues and his trauma so he took his life…

Now a little bit about this Thai Drama as well as I will give a slight recap of this Thai Drama… The Judgement

The drama begins when the main female character of The Judgement… Lookkaew reaching the podium and expressing that her university and the people, the student body especially has done nothing good for her. Expressing how their judgements affect and cause victims like her to become victims over and over again. Then Lookkaew pulls out a gun, exclaims she hopes she makes them all happy, points the gun to her head, and shoots herself!

Scene shifts to months back…with Lookkaew waking up after a good sleep.  She gets ready for school and takes two gift boxes from her desk which is her gifts for her dad and stepmom’s wedding anniversary…

She stops by to pray at the altar for her mom, whom passed aways when she was young…

Her father and a stepmother, Buppha, are in the dining area and her father just cooked a big breakfast and wants them all to eat together.  As she gives them both their respective gift boxes…she says she can’t join them because she has a cheerleading audition with her bestfriend and wants to fit in her cheerleading uniform…but she will set the meal her father aside and eat it later. She then leaves but forgets her uniform…

Once Lookkaew leaves…Buppha says that Lookkaew hasn’t fully accepted as family yet, as shown with the individual wedding gift…cause if Lookkaew gave one to them, then that means Lookkaew accepts her.  Lookkaew’s father then tell her not to worry, that Lookkaew will accept her at one point because now Lookkaew is giving her gifts and that is already a promising change…

Scene changes with Lookaew being playful her boyfriend is Aud…whom she  likes but who she also isn’t taking seriously yet because of his playboy nature…just before she gets in class…  She joins her bestfriend and is in the same class with Potae and Archa…who becomes there team members for a project but have to postpone on that since she and have best friend have a cheerleading audition…

She realizes that she forgotten her cheerleading outfit for her cheerleading audition but still did well but later calls her father to bring it for her… While her father drives on the way to her…he gets into an incident leading to him ending up in a coma…

Some time past..

Lookkaew is depressed by her father’s state and the tension with her stepmother, who tries her best to get closer to her…she accepts her boyfriend’s invite to her party… She gets drunk and unconscious… Aud rapes her… Not fully grasping she was raped yet…she avoids, breaks up with Aud and fights to stays away from him relentlessly… Then somebody posts indecent photos of her of the night…whom she believed is Aud’s doing… Thus the start of her harsh judgement by people and her reputation tainted…but also finding the people who really care about her…

Now I will start this review…

WARNING! LOTS of spoilers…so read if you are really curious and watch The Judgement if this stirs your interest…

But I understand too if you don’t since the theme of Rape which this drama is centered around is a sensitive and delicate topic…

Anyways…

I want to clarify that I don’t mean to offend anyone with this review or whatever I may comment… I mean no offense and I am just giving an honest review about this drama…

Anyways…

Overall…I thought this story, although complicated and happens to have a topic of Rape which is such as difficult and sensitive topic to handle especially in dramas, shows and movies… I thought it was interestingly executed in The Judgement… Most especially, how people judge the victims depending on ones beliefs and how society is affected or affects one’s perception on anyone including victims of sexual abuse…

Honestly, there are some parts that irked and made me uncomfortable and sad but I still thought the story was executed well enough to understand why this drama is called The Judgement with the topic of Rape as the main issue…

First…there is alot of victim shaming and slut shaming here…

It is just horrible and heartbreaking… with all the heartless judgemental people in the drams… It is not funny… Even if you don’t like someone, not approve of what someone does in there live or see something that seems indecent to you… The judgement is just too much…

Also, the underlying themes that if “a man taken a woman, she belongs to that man” in the topic of sex is just misogynistic! It also includes the idea, that a person is asking for it if they are dressed in a way or act out in some way… It is just NOT right. Even the idea of forcing yourself on someone after they clearly rejected you and they are incapacitated and unconscious just because you love them, like Aud… definitely NOT right!

Anyways I will not expound too much but I think you can get the idea either way especially from my summary recap… But I truly believe that even though some parts are patchy…I felt that this drama was a well thought out, beautifully made complex story and it brought me to tears… I know though there are things that I won’t really completely understand but this drama brought me towards so many various emotions… you can’t help but be filled with so many of them…

For instance,…how the three rape victims dealt with the pain of their ordeal as well as the aftermath of it…

Heads up…major spoilers…

Anyways…

I felt for Namnhao…the third victim of The Judgement …he been through so much.  His situation reminds me of Nira’s from Bai Mai Tee Plid Plew not being accepted by her father without the part of being abused and degraded by her aunt. He was already not comfortable as himself and not sure his parents will accept him for being gay. But I am sure he is relieved his twin brother still accepts and loves him… Although he worries that his brother will hate him later on if people will start questioning his brother’s preferences too since they are twins… The only time he could be himself is when he was with his potential boyfriend.  Like I mentioned for Namnhao’s character description…… he was delighted this boy is into him, happy of being himself with and as his relationship develops with the other teenage boy… They went to have fun at a gay bar when they get into a fight…causing Namnhao to remain at the gay bar and get drunk… This leads to him getting gang rape but unidentified males who aren’t caught and through his survival his parents found out not only he was raped but also gay… And his parents weren’t sympathetic and treated him as having a disease… And don’t let me get started on what they said about him coming from a gay bar and getting raped!

Anyways… this caused Namnhao to get even more very depressed leading to his brother asking Lookkaew for help… Only other time he became happy was hanging out with Lookkaew, his brother Namnuea and Archa…  But despite his one time happiness after his ordeal…he felt that he wasn’t strong enough dealing with his issues and his trauma so he took his life… I am not undermining Lookkaew and Som’s ordeal and situation but I felt that Namnhao is story was the most tragic…and was completely broken…

Felt this because like I said..his situation reminds me of Nira’s from Bai Mai Tee Plid Plew not being accepted by her father without the part of being abused and degraded by her aunt. Adding to that, her mom got into an accident and died the day of her sex reassignment surgery…For more on Bai Mai Tee Plid Plew  please check out my review for it. I posted it a while back. And interestingly enough…Buddpa played the mom in Nira in Bai Mai Tee Plid Plew.  Anyways, I really felt sad and heartbroken for Namnhao…

As for Som, the second rape victim… I felt for her too… Even though, I am not into the idea of her stripping online for money since I believe she could have found other means for money.  But I understand her position… Like I mention in her character description… she  became an online stripper to help pay off her parents debts which was mainly caused by her greedy mother who always ask creditors for loans… So massive debt! Because of her identity as a girl stripping online, she is labeled with a lot of bad names and the majority of the school stays away from her. Every time she gets ridiculed and judged…she marks a tally at the wall at a rooftop she discovered to take time for herself. When Lookkaew’s indecent photos came out way before news of Lookkaew’s rape was announced… Som was the first one to comfort Lookkaew and had Lookkaew finally realize and accept that she was raped by her boyfriend.  Later, Som gets raped as while by a client who tricked her into coming to eat with him…telling her that she will get the money upstairs from when they had a meal.  She ignores and brushes off her rape…pretending as if it never happened…. But despite pretending her rape never happened…and taking other jobs… She develops trauma and a PSTD especially after almost deciding to have sex with a client/fan but couldn’t do it. Interestingly enough…that client/fan helps her get a decent job at his company and helps her bring her rapist to justice. Despite that she still has to deal with the trauma as well as the judgement and insincerity by others… Anyways, I felt for Som…  I felt sad that such as strong girl is driven to the point to becoming an online stripper… to ending up brushing off the hate and judgement on her occupation and then ends up doing the same after her ordeal…which was horribly released to the public. Weakened but kind of accepting of her ordeal by ignoring it happened and brushing it off. I felt that Som’s story is the directors interesting way of executing a victim trying to move on and forget sexual abuse…but couldn’t totally do that…

Finally…Lookkaew…as I mentioned a couple of times earlier…Lookkaew’s mother died when she was young and her father remarried. So, she is already dealing with family issues.  Despite that she is well-liked and popular in her university. Because of that she tries her best not to stand out too much, so she won’t overshadow her best friend, whom she wants to get noticed and praised by people too. Not only that she is dating a popular rich boy in school, who is the son of a Thai ambassador.  The thing is…her boyfriend is Aud…whom she likes but who she also isn’t taking seriously yet because of his playboy nature. So, that is a relationship issue for her there…even though she is just taking her time with him. One day, Lookkaew forgets her cheerleading outfit for her cheerleading audition and asks her father to bring it for her… While her father drives on the way to her…he gets into an incident leading to him ending up in a coma…  Depressed by her father’s state and the tension with her stepmother, who tries to get closer to her…she accepts her boyfriend’s invite to her party… She gets drunk and unconscious… Aud rapes her… Not fully grasping she was raped yet…she avoids, breaks up with Aud and fights to stays away from him relentlessly… Then somebody posts indecent photos of her of the night…whom she believed is Aud’s doing… Thus, the start of her harsh judgement by people…as well as her reputation being ruined due to the judgements of people especially those who don’t try to find out the truth… She takes the interesting take of a victim who even after her ordeal…tries her best to fight for not only her rights but others as well, take the notion that a victim and anyone for the matter shouldn’t be judged, make people realize that a perpetrator can also be people who judges and ridicule someone and that can lead someone to die…

Anyways…Lookkaew went through so much that could break her…yes she was unconscious during her ordeal  but that doesn’t change the fact that she still went through it and she pain she felt after realizing she went through that ordeal…her rape.  Cause it always affect her somehow…knowing she was violated by someone she trusted and even care about… Despite that she tries her best to fight for herself…to make people realized she was wronged…and to make them realize to not judge someone especially unfairly and don’t know the truth and that everyone should protect their rights! I thought that although effective, that Lookkaew expresses her point in the last episode also hinted in the first episode in such a graphic violent way. But either way, I felt that Lookkaew grew into a strong person…still at times feeling hurt and in pain because of her ordeal…but she grew into a stronger person.

Anyways…

A couple of cons in the drama though…

Although I am glad,  Aud realized his fault and the pain he caused, even though it took a while… I felt that even though that was case…he was kind of easily forgiven especially by Lookkaew near the end… Even though he dropped out of the university after doing the right thing after turning himself in…I felt that he wasn’t punished accordingly… cause his overall punishment was meh…and was merely decided by the school board.

I felt that Lookkaew was also very forgiving towards the person who betrayed her…because that person not only release the photos and videos of her rape… That person was hiding and basically witnessed and let Aud rape her… But then again…not sure if it I can accept it, maybe it is a different story if you are really close and always felt guilty toward someone you can about….that you forgive them for betraying you because you felt that you cause them to betray you… and that is what Lookkaew felt towards the person who betrayed her by releasing the photos and videos of her rape to the entire university.  Not sure if I can accept that and be sympathetic… But I will just understand Lookkaew …just because Lookkaew totally shocked the person who was already feeling guilty for her betrayal in the last episode along with all the other bashers and the rest of the student body with her graphic violent way of expressing that the perpetrators can also be those who made their judgements, repost false facts and degrading information over again making them victims over again…and could possibility push victims to hurt and kill themselves… Like I said although effective, Lookkaew expresses her point in the last episode also hinted in the first episode in such a graphic violent way. This part am also conflicted by but she definitely made her point…

If you want to know if she survives or not….

Check out The Judgement on Netflix! Once again, it is not for kids!

Anyways…

I was also a little weirded out by the fact that Lookkaew got close to Archa, who was kind of stalking her in the beginning … I won’t be surprised if he was doing it for a while since was practically hiding in a corner when she and Aud were playing around in the first episode… And decided to date near the end of the drama, before deciding to break up.

Also, some parts especially the dialogue can be quite patchy…

But overall… I felt that The Judgement is a good, pretty decent drama to watch.  And I felt that the entire cast did an amazing job in their roles whether they are there as support or to inflict harm on the main character….Lookkaew.  The main actress Mild Lapassalan Jiravechsoontornkul who played Lookkaew is undeniably an amazing, talented, young upcoming actress. I thought that she played her role very well, expressing her character’s emotions well. She deserves being known as one of the most sought-after actresses in Thailand… She is also in a couple Thai Dramas I’ve review before…Happy Birthday, Ugly Duckling and U-Prince which I am planning to do 12 part reviews for because the 1st overall review of it was more of a Rating Review l…

Anyways…

I hope with this review, you will give this drama a chance especially since this will be my first ever Thai TV drama review in a while!!! Woohoo!
