The Untamed Chinese Drama Review

Hello!!! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and healthy…

I am doing alright…been busy even though I’m home…I have been working remotely, running home errands, keeping healthy…etc… that includes watching dramas and when I have time working my reviews… like this drama that I’m about to talk about with you all…

Anyways…

This drama review has been a long time coming especially since it is a review of one of the most popular dramas as well as one of the most controversial ones in China due to this drama being an adaptation of BL aka Boy Love novel…especially it is not usually the main focus in dramas especially in Asian countries…unless they are in novels or mangas…or in Thailand where they are more open and accepting to the topic the theme of BL on screen…

I want to clarify that I don’t mean any offense with this review, but I truly believe this drama is worth checking out…maybe to even to lessen one’s misgivings and / or at least despite one’s own views to give everyone especially in the LGBTQ the respect they deserve because they are human beings too.

Also… I hope you with this review, you will give this drama a chance especially since this will be my first ever Chinese TV drama for this month of June!!! Woohoo!

Finally…

Presenting…

The Untamed Chinese Drama Review

Disclaimer: Pictures of the tv drama The Untamed and its cast, are definitely not mine. And just add add… info of the cast…I got them Wikipedia, MyDramaList and Asian wiki.✌️

First off, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film and television… at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this tv series review as tv lover and book lover…well cause like the movie version, this tv series is an adaptation of a Chinese novel. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Just a tidbit, the The Untamed is based on the the BL novel of the same name written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu.  The series depicts a fictional Xianxia world where humans attempt to cultivate to a state of immortality, known as Xian.  The protagonist of the series, Wei Wuxian, due to certain circumstances, strayed from the conservative cultivation path to Xian, and eventually created Mo Dao (the Demonic Path), which is why this series is often unofficially translated by fan communities as Grandmaster of Demonic Path/Cultivation, or The Founder of Diabolism.

The Untamed  can be watched on both Viki and Netflix!

Anyways…here it is goes…

I will start first by talking about the main leads of The Untamed….Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo…

Xiao Zhan also known as Sean Xiao, is a Chinese actor and singer. He is a member of the male idol group X NINE. Xiao received recognition for his roles in the dramas 2018’s Oh! My Emperor and 2019’s The Untamed.  In 2015, he participated in the reality program X-Fire where he trained to be an idol with 15 other trainees.  He debuted alongside eight other trainees in the idol group X NINE in 2016, taking on the position of main vocal. X NINE released their first mini album X Jiu in September 2016. In 2016, Xiao made his acting debut in the fantasy web drama Super Star Academy where he played the leading role. The same year, he played a minor role in the time-travel romance drama Shuttle Love Millennium.  In 2018, he starred in the historical romance web drama Oh! My Emperor. The series was well-received for its comedic and romantic storyline, and Xiao earned recognition with his role as a domineering yet gentle prince.  In 2019, Xiao starred in the xianxia drama The Untamed, based on the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, as one of the two male leads alongside Wang Yibo. His portrayal of the carefree and wild Wei Wuxian received positive reviews, which led to increased popularity for him.  The series was also popular overseas, leading to increased global recognition for the actor.

In The Untamed, Xiao Zhan plays Wei Wuxian whose birth name is Wei Ying.  His is also known as the Yiling Patriarch.  Wei Wuxian is a Jiang sect disciple who later chooses to pursue demonic cultivation. He wields the Suibian sword and Chenqing flute,  and is known for his ability to invent new spiritual techniques and inventions such as the Stygian Tiger Seal. He is kind-hearted, optimistic, mischievous, and loyal, and cares deeply for his friends and family. He and Lan Wangji regard each other as soulmates.

Wang Yibo is a Chinese actor and singer. He is a member of South Korean-Chinese boyband UNIQ.  Wang made his acting debut in the film MBA Partners. He then played the role of Red Boy in A Chinese Odyssey Part Three, and starred in the romance comedy drama Love Actually. Since 2016, he is a host on the variety program Day Day Up. In 2017, Wang was cast in his first lead role in the youth xianxia drama Private Shushan Gakuen. The same year, he made a guest appearance in the youth campus drama When We Were Young, and was cast in the science fiction drama Super Talent. Wang received recognition for his role as Lan Wangji in the drama The Untamed. In 2018, Wang became a dance mentor in the reality survival show Produce 101, He gained increased recognition for his dance skills on the show.  In 2019, Wang competed as a professional racer as part of the Yamaha China Racing Team.

In The Untamed,  Wang Yibo plays Lan Wangji whose birth name is Lan Zhan. He is also known as Lord Hanguang, or the Light Bearing Lord. Lan Wangji is the second young master of Lan sect and one of the Two Jades of Lan. He wields the Bichen sword and the Wangji guqin. He is cold, strict, distant, and difficult to get along with, but has a good heart and a sense of justice. He holds a soft spot for Wei Wuxian, who he regards as his soulmate.

Moving on now…

A slight recap of beginning and then my review…

The jianghu world is ruled by the powerful Wen sect, which governs over the smaller Lan, Jiang, Nie and Jin sects…

Around this time, although it took some time especially with Lan Wangi’s stoic firmness…the carefree Wei Wuxian becomes fast friends with the honorable Lan Wangji!

And during their adventures, the pair and their friends…including Wei Wuxian’s sworn brother Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang soon finds out that the head of the Wen sect is the evil mastermind behind a series of plots that would wreak havoc upon the lands…

Also along the way…Wei Wuxian goes on a path where he has no choice but to pursue the dangerous and unpredictable path of demonic cultivation…as well as creating the unstable Stygian Tiger Seal…after a near fatal run-in with the Wen sect with his sworn brother…

This soon leads to the smaller sects…Lan, Jiang, Nie and Jin…banding together and successfully overthrow the Wen sect…as result the Jin sect becomes the main sect overlooking the other sects…

Despite the successful downfall of the Wen sect and the supposed peace… the innocent Wen sect survivors were being persecuted… including the Wen sibings Wen Qing & Wen Ning… whom helped Wei Wuxian in the past and the sibling’s innocent farmer people.

Wei Wuxian’s attempts to protect the innocent members of the Wen sect from unfair maltreatment which soon lead to a series of disasters, and that lead to his presumed death…

This is the actual start of the story when Wei Wuxian reappears sixteen years later via body sacrifice ritual of the illegitimate son of Jin head also an ex-disciple of the Jin sect, who wants Wei Wuxian to seek revenge for him…

Along the way…Wei Wuxian works together with Lan Wangji to solve a series of murder mysteries, eventually finding and defeating the true culprit….which leads to a bigger revelation that connects the present and past incidents!

Moving on…now my review on The Untamed…

Please note that I will “try” keep this short just because I don’t give too much away…

Anyways…

It is so long but … I love this Chinese Drama! I can definitely say that it is one of the best fantasy martial arts world dramas I’ve ever seen! Even though it is 50 episodes in all. For me I feel that this fifty episode drama is worth the watch and it really pulls me into its mythical world!

As I mentioned earlier…the The Untamed is based lon the BL novel of the same name written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. And because of this I felt the novel was  well adapted into the small screen as drama…

Another thing that I found interesting is that since the novel is a BL which means Boy Love or Yaoi. This means that The Untamed is a donghua drama series featuring a romantic relationship between male characters…

Anyways…I am not sure yet, but I am thinking about reading the novel and/or manga version of The Untamed akaGrandmaster of Demonic Path/Cultivation, or The Founder of Diabolism..even though I am not really into Yaoi and/or BL due to my own personal preferences as well as my religion yet I have nothing against BL as long as the story is really good and am okay with it if it is too extreme. So thinking real hard on this before I get into it… I will likely check out the donghua version first…

Donghua is like…, Anime is to the Japanese while Donghua is to the Chinese. Hope I explained that simply and well enough. If not, peace out I mean no offense….

Also, back to the topic of BL and Yaoi…just to clarify…I don’t mean offense and I am just giving an honest review about this drama……and just to repeat myself from the paragraph before I snuck in Donghua… I am not really into Yaoi and/or BL due to my own personal preferences as well as my religion but I have nothing against it as long as the story is really good and am okay with it if it is not too extreme… On the drama wise with LGBTQ themes, for myself, I would give the drama or movie a chance if the story and reviews are really good.

Also like in my Thai drama review of Bai Mai Plid Plew,  I want to clarify and once again I don’t mean any offense with this review, but I truly believe this drama is worth checking out…maybe to even to lessen one’s misgivings and / or at least despite one’s own views to give everyone especially in the LGBTQ the respect they deserve because they are human beings too.

On the LGBTQ themes depicted in drama and/or movies, for myself, I would give the drama or movie a chance if the story and reviews are really good. And this Chinese drama The Untamed is one of them…

The only thing is the topic of BL is not accepted on screen in China, so the directors of  Chinese drama The Untamed modified it enough to make to more suitable for general viewers… And they did this by making the male character pairings especially the main characters, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji,  who are originally in romantic relationships, more like soulmates, partners and brothers. And if there is anything romantic between those characters…it is only slightly hinted.

Anyways…despite this change…I still enjoyed this drama! The visuals and cinematography is both awesome and beautiful to me. I also love how there is a mixture of drama, comedy, mystery, martial arts, swordplay and detective work. Especially since Wei Wuxian was basically brought back to life sixteen years later via body sacrifice ritual of the illegitimate son of Jin head also an ex-disciple of the Jin sect, who wants Wei Wuxian to seek revenge for him… And he because of his second chance of life, he works together with Lan Wangji to solve a series of murder mysteries, eventually finding and defeating the true culprit….which leads to a bigger revelation that connects the present and past incidents!

I also love the dynamics the Wei Wuxian has with most of the characters in Untamed…whether they are major or minor characters… The close sibling relationship he has with his adopted siblings Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng or the Yunmeng Jiang sect, despite the malicious false rumors between their father and his mom. The camaderie between him, his sworn brother Jian Chen, Nie Huaisang of the Nie sect.  The respect, trust and somewhat sibling relationship he developed between him and the Wen sibling…Wen Qing and Wen Ning…despite the obvious disdain thee other sects have against the Wen sect from past evil plots caused by the head of the Wen sect upon the other sects. And many to others…including those he met in his second chance at life like Lan Sizhu and Jin Ling…. and of course, Wei Wuxian’s relationship with Lan Wangji or the Lan sect which I will not expound on so I won’t spoil anything.

But anyways it is up to you guys if you want to check out and give The Untamed a chance… But either way this dramas definitely high in my highly recommend list!  I hope with this review, you will give this drama a chance especially since this will be my first ever Chinese TV drama review in a while!!! Woohoo! And most importantly, once again, although BL is hinted in the drama version since in China BL is not accepted, I do hope this review of mines lessen one’s misgivings and / or at least despite one’s own views to give everyone especially in the LGBTQ community the respect they deserve because they are human beings too.
