Hello beautiful people, I hope you all are doing well and are staying at home, safe and healthy…

Either way I apologize for being behind schedule on posting this review. But on the bright side, I was able to touch this up …  To make sure I gave all of my thoughts on this…especially since this is the first review Chinese movie I am posting in while…especially for this month of June!!! Hehe… Woohoo!!

Anyways been a long time coming and finally presenting…

Disclaimer: Pictures of the show, cast are not mine. And just add, info on the cast I got from Wikipedia, MyDramaList and Asian wiki.  By the way, just to sneak in, you can find this Chinese movie on Amazon Prime, Viki/Viki.com and AsianCrush app …

First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this review as a movie lover… And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Moving on… I will first talk about the main leads cast of The Witness…Yang Mi and Luhan…

Warning…I might give some spoilers when I talk about the characters…

So read this if you don’t mind spoilers! LOL…

Anyways…

Yang Mi is a popular Chinese actress and singer, who made her acting debut is historical television series Tang Ming Huang.  She later received recognition for her leading roles in various television series such as 2007’s Wang Zhaojun, 2009’s Chinese Paladin 3, 2011’s Palace, 2012’s Beijing Love Story,  2014’s Swords of Legends, 2016’s The Interpreter, what this review is focused on 2017’s Eternal Love Ten Miles of Peace Blossoms,  and her most recent 2018’s The Legend of Fuyao. She also received recognition for her leading roles in various films as well…such as 2011’s Mysterious Island, 2013-2015’s Tiny Times and 2015’s The Witness. She won Best Actress Award in 2017 at the WorldFest Houston International Festival for her performance in Reset. She was also chosen as one of the New Four Dan Actresses by Southern Metropolis Daily.

In The Witness, Yang Mi plays Lu Xiaoxing, a blind woman who was a detective currently on probation for her part in causing an incident that led to her brother (Liang Cong)’s death and her eventual blindness. Although, it was an accident, she feels much a regret and guilt, because she felt she caused her brother’s death. She feels that If she had not impulsively stormed after him away from his band, and handcuffed him to her car, them arguing, her brother would’ve still been alive.   She, not long after becomes an eventual witness after one day traveling without her disability dog Cong-Cong…she was nearly became a victim to a plastic surgeon turned deranged serial kidnapper/killer, who is kidnapping women using a dating app in effort to remake them  into his late sister’s likeness out his guilt in accidently killing her in a confrontation. She witnesses well hears someone being run over. She contacted the police as soon as possible and despite not being able to see the killer, she was able to direct the police especially Captain Lu in the right direction in finding the serial kidnapper using her other senses. She at first didn’t see eye to eye with another witness which is Luhan’s character….

Lu Han also mononymously known as Luhan is a Chinese singer and actor, who was former a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group EXO as well as it sub-group EXO-M before departing from the group in October 2014. After his departure from the group he focused his career in China

In The Witness, Luhan plays Lin Chong, a delivery boy and a tough rebellious skateboarding young man who reminds Xiaoxing of her brother, we was in a band that she greatly disapproves of because she wants him to go to school. Anyways, back to Luhan’s character, on top of a being a rebellious tough skateboarder who happens to be a fan of Xiaoxing’s brother’s band. He was also witness at the time Xiaoxing’s near kidnapping, mainly witnessing the actual type of car the plastic surgeon turned deranged serial kidnapper/killer used. He at first, doesn’t like or see eye to eye with Xiaoxing, who did not believe that he was telling the truth at first… After a while and a couple incidences, they began working together with the police and Captain Lu to find the serial kidnapper and find the missing victims.

Now…I will move on to the short summary of The Witness

Since this is a summary…there will definitely be spoilers so if you are interested in the film, haven’t watch it yet and don’t want to be spoiled …scroll down to my overall review…LOL…Peace…

Anyways back with the short summary of The Witness

The Witness begins with a young man, Liang Cong, performing as lead singer to his popular band at a club when his police officer sister, Xiaoxing rushes in, drags him to her vehicle and handcuffs him to her car…driving them away while expressing her frustration that she as she older sister doesn’t want him to do music and go back to him.  Liang Cong, expresses to her that he doesn’t want to go back to school and just wants to continue his dream of making music and at for frustrations fights with her over the wheel.  They should get into an accident then let leads to Liang Cong’s death and Xiaoxing’s blindness.

Despite her blindness, Xiaoxing tries her best and works hard from scratch to became a police officer after learning braille and wants to go back to the police force but she on probation for her part in causing an incident that led to her brother (Liang Cong)’s death and her eventual blindness. Although, it was an accident, and she tries her best to move on in her impairment and push to become an officer again… She feels much a regret and guilt, because she felt she caused her brother’s death. She witnesses well hears someone being run over…

This is when the main plot begins…

She contacts the police as soon as possible and despite not being able to see the killer, she was able to direct the police especially Captain Lu in the right direction in finding the serial kidnapper using her other senses. She soon meets another witness…Linchong….whom she doesn’t seem to meet eye to eye with at first….

This is when the story beings to pick off even more…

And still is where I will end my summary as to not spoil anymore in the story…

Finally, I will talk about my thoughts and overall review…

Just to clarify this will be a somewhat short review since I decided to give a summary of the movie instead…

First off, I totally adore and love the main leads of The Witness… Yang Mi and Luhan…who respectively play Xiaoxing and Linchong…  I thought they played their respective roles well.  Although I do admit that as much as I love Yang Mi in her other works like Ten Miles of Peach Blossom and Legend of Fuyao, and played a believable blind woman here in The Witness…her screen presence wasn’t strong enough to carry the movie, but balances well enough with her dynamics with Luhan and his character to carry the entire film.

I totally adore the disability dog Cong-Cong! I was so sad when the serial kidnapper/culprit killed him…

On Yang Mi’s and Luhan’s characters…Xiaoxing and Linchong…  I thought they are both equally attractive interesting, smart and flawed people.

On Linchong’s flaws, he was stubborn and although he was an actual witiness to the type of vehicle the serial kidnapper used and has a sense of justice, he tried to use his knowledge at first mostly to get the reward on the make of the car… He does get on the defensive when Xiaoxing doesn’t believe him, and clarifies that although he is aiming to get the reward, he is not a liar and he knows for sure the true make of the car…

On Xiaoxing’s flaws though, I particularly did not like how she rushes in, drags him to her vehicle and handcuffs him to her car…driving them away while expressing her frustration that she as she older sister doesn’t want him to do music and go back to him.  I impression I got from that is major lack of judgement on her part and she basically used her authority as a police officer to someone in her car, sibling or not, just to try to get her point across. I did not like that, she could have found a much convenient them in the privacy of their homes to work things out. Also it seemed like she mixed her civic duty as a officer of the law with her personal life, I thought that was irresponsible.  But I also thought it is sad that she had to learn of her mistakes of doing something like that that led to something tragic and fatal…her brother’s death and her blindness, that then leads to much regret and guilt…

On both Xiaoxing and Linchong…

Even though they didn’t know eachother for a long time and didn’t like eachother at first…they slowly developed an understanding each other and a sibling-like relationship that developed quite naturally! I thought that was quite beautiful and sweet how their relationship changed to something more profound despite the creepy circumstances they are in…dealing with a deranged culprit who is kidnapping women using a dating app in effort to remake them  into his late sister’s likeness out his guilt in accidently killing her in a confrontation.

As for the deranged culprit, Tang Zhen, who is kidnapping women using a dating app in effort to remake them into his late sister’s likeness out his guilt in accidently killing her in a confrontation was creepy and the actor, Zhu Yawen, played him well. But…what I cannot make sense of is Tang Zhen trying to push and persuade Xiaoxing that they are alike and are both sibling killers. Another thing is I felt his Tang Zhen didn’t suddenly get obsessed in Xiaoxing and started going after Linchong, it is very likely who would have goitten away with his crime a little longer but it definitely would not stop Xiaoxing and Linchong in helping the police in wanting to help capture him.

Overall, I thought this thriller movie was amazing and a pretty good decent film! A nice balance of creepy and thrill factor. It is worth the watch and ifyou are interested in checking it out, it is available on Amazon Prime and AsianCrush app!!!
