The Ghost Detective Korean Drama Review

I hope everyone is doing well and are safe and healthy!

It’s been a while since my last post, I apologize for that and the delay…

I’ve watched this Korean drama a while back when it first came out in and I also binge re-watched this Korean drama not too long ago… It is also one of the dramas that I had a couple of reviews that you can say were at a back burner, need a refresher, look over and to be worked on more…and this was one of them.  Either way I apologize for being behind schedule on posting this review.

But on the bright side, I was able to touch this up …  To make sure I gave all of my thoughts on this…especially since this is my first Korean drama review I am posting for the month of June!!! Hehe… Woohoo!!

A long time coming…

The Ghost Detective Korean Drama Review

Disclaimer: Pictures of the show, cast are not mine. And just add, info on the cast I got from Wikipedia and Asian wiki.  By the way, just to sneak in, you can find this Korean tv drama on Viki

First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… Not at all…nada zilch degree. But I love movies books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this Korean drama review as a Tv show lover and a Korean drama lover…. And just to clarify too, sorry if at some points I might run on with my words or have any grammatical errors… but I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

The Ghost Detective can be watched on Viki.

To begin with the review, I will start with the cast of The Ghost Detective

On the cast, as a whole and in their roles, I thought that they did an awesome job and I felt for the characters they played. What first captured my interest in this Korean drama was the main cast! Most especially..Park Eun-bin and Daniel Choi!

Park Eun-bin is a South Korean actress. She debuted at the age of five and has starred in numerous TV dramas as a child actress. She played her first leading role in 2012 time-traveling romance Operation Proposal . Park gained recognition for her role in youth drama Hello, My Twenties! and its sequel, which I totally loved her in by the way. If you haven’t read it yet…my Hello, My Twenties! review is already up. So please go check it out if you haven’t yet.

In The Ghost Detective, Park Eun-bin plays Jung Yeo-wool, a cheerful, persistent and strong assistant detective. She is the main female protagonist in The Ghost Detective.

Choi Daniel is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his roles in Jugglers as Nam Chi Won, High Kick Through the Roof, Cyrano Agency, Baby Faced Beauty and School 2013. He is also an anchorman on KBS World Radio since 2011 and a DJ on KBS 2FM since 2013.

In The Ghost Detective, Choi Daniel plays Lee Da-il, a sharp and tenacious detective who displays his abilities only when he is investigating a case that interests him. He is the main male protagonist in The Ghost Detective.

Lee Ji-ah a South Korean actress. Her breakout role was in 2007’s The Legend. This led to her starring in 2008’s television series Beethoven Virus, 2010’s Athena: Goddess of War, 2011’s Me Too, Flower! and 2013’s Thrice Married Woman.

In The Ghost Detective, Lee Ji-ah plays Sunwoo Hye, a mysterious woman who always wears a red dress and carries both an innocent and spooky vibe with her. The main antagonist of The Ghost Detective.

The rest of the Ghost Detective team includes:

Kim Won-hae as Han Sang-seop, Lee Da-il’s partner at the private detective agency. A local private investigator and chief of a detective agency.

Lee Jae-kyun as Park Jung-dae, a smart and vigorous police detective, who is romantically interested in Jung Yeo-wool.

Lee Joo-young as Gil Chae-won, a medical examiner who has the ability to communicate with ghosts. She used to be a shaman.

Now am moving on with a big of the beginning summary and the plot of The Ghost Detective

The story begins with a Lee Da-il and his partner at the private detective agency, Detective Han Sang-seop… They are working on moving out their furniture and at the verge of closing down their agency which is in a beautiful house structure, when a potential client and a lawyer, whom Lee Da-il was acquainted with in the past came for their assistance. This potential client happens to be a conglomerate figure who decided to bring his case to them and not only because he doesn’t trust the police but also because involving the police could bring in the media. This potential client issue is, there their is a series of kidnappings and one of them happens to be his daughter. This client makes a deal with them that if they solve his case and bring his daughter back…only involving the police once case is solved…he who recently claimed ownership of the property and their agency, will allow them occupy their property for free…(side note forgot it this is never-ending deal or for one year) but this deal caused both Lee Dai-il and his partner to accept the case..The case soon leads Lee Da-il to get mysterious accounts from some witnesses including a young girl… During an account from the young girl witness, Jung Yeo-wool who at the time was doing odd jobs and deliveries…happens to overhear especially Lee Da-il’s response to the young girl along the lines that although he doesn’t believe what he sees but will still investigate and keep in mind the girl’s account… Leads Jung Yeo-wool to apply as a detective assistant at Lee Da-il’s detective agency, who at first doesn’t accept her but later on does because of Jung Yeo-wool’s tenacity and Yeo-wool wanting him to help her solve younger sister’s death whom she believe did not commit suicide…that she was murdered… That a mysterious woman in red, whom she and her sister could only see, enticed her younger sister to kill herself… The fact that Yeo-wool believing that her sister’s suicide is not murder, caused Lee Da-il to accept her as a detective assistant…because he was in the same position as her when he believed that his mother’s suicide is not suicide but murder…

Soon, after his solving the kidnapping case and rescuing the kidnapped children, including his client’s child…Lee Da-il somehow runs into this mysterious woman red..who influenced the suspect of the case to kill him..

Lee Da-il comes back as a ghost and somehow only Jung Yeo-wool sees him and he can only touch her…

Together, Lee Da-il and Jung Yeo-wool worked together solving cases linking to the mysterious woman in red… Along the way, adding people to their ghost detective team..and learning the mysterious women in red in definitely involved in their respective loved ones’ deaths and other suicidal deaths as well…

The main plot of The Ghost Detective basically revolves around the partnership of an ace private detective who “died” and become a ghost and a the older sister of a victim who believes that her sister’s death isn’t suicide but in fact murder but a mysterious woman who no one but her and her sister and the other victim’s of suicide sees..

Moving on now to my actual review which is honestly will be much shorter than the recap of the beginning of the story and mentions of the characters…

What first caught my interest in this drama is Park Eun-bin and Daniel Choi. Park Eun-bin who I loved and adored in “Hello My Twenties” and Daniel Choi whom I also loved and adored in “Baby Faced Beauty”!  I thought they both exceptionally played their roles respectively as Jung Yeo-wool and Lee Da-il…. Yeo-wool who is the cheerful, persistent, and strong assistant detective that is determined to find the truth behind her younger sister’s suicide and finding the killer / instigator. And Lee Da-il, the a sharp and tenacious detective who displays his abilities only when he is investigating a case that interests him who helps Yeo-wool out and slowly how connected they are to each other.  Anyways I thought that Park Eun-bin and Daniel Choi’s dynamics in The Ghost Detective was awesome! Their dynamics with their Ghost Detective awesome and gave the sense of an amazing dream team! I love their Ghost Detective team!

The main antagonist of The Ghost Detective…  Sunwoo Hye played by Lee Ji-ah. I thought that she was amazing and played her role well as the murderous ghost instigating humans to their deaths…. Will not expound any more that that!

I honestly thought the storyline was interesting and very captivating. I though that there was a nice blend of mystery, thriller, drama, supernatural elements with hints of comedy and romance! I love how romance is not the focus even though it is slightly hinted. Thus, in my opinion, making this a well diverse drama!

Not sure, if there were any plot holes because of the crime elements of the drama but I truly believe that the writers of The Ghost Detective did any amazing job.  I really enjoyed it and I totally felt the presence and feelings of the characters, and I like how each character has a deeper story or background to them.

I also like how that although there were some small cases in between the cases that they had to solve somehow, they all have a connection to the mysterious woman serial killer who is in fact a murderous ghost…. Sunwoo Hye.

The soundtrack is awesome and beautiful too! I exceptionally love the song “Dream Me” sung by Joy of Red Velvet and Mark of NCT.

Will not expound anymore as to not spoil anything, so you guys if you interested, you can definitely check this show out!

Thank you @Viki for adding this to series to your lineup! This an awesome show, in my opinion I highly recommend!
