Anyways…

First off, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film and television… But I love movies and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow. Despite the lack of degree on this area, I will still do this tv drama review as movie and tv lover and book lover… cause this movie is an adaptation of a Chinese novel Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. And just to clarify too, I apologize for any run-ons or any grammatical errors… But I promised that I will be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Just a tidbit, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms drama and the Once Upon A Time movie is based on a novel of the same name called Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms by Tan Qi Gong Zi… …

Oh… by the way, there is an English translation version of the novel called To the Sky Kingdom!

Anyways…here it is goes…

I will start first by talking about the main leads of Once Upon A Time movie… Liu Yifei and Yang Yang…

Liu Yifei is a popular Chinese-American actress, singer and model. She is also known as Crystal Liu and is widely known as the Fairy Sister of the Chinese entertainment industry. She was well known for her role in 2005’s Chinese Paladin which cemented her popularity. But her career and popularity soared even more for her role in 2006’s The Return of the Condor Heroes where she received acclaim for her performance. This led to more projects for her in China as well as abroad.  She is set to play the role of Mulan in its live action movie version!

In Once Upon A Time movie, Liu Yifei plays role of Bai Qian, Si Yin and Su Su.

As Bai Qian, as we know from the drama…is the youngest child and only daughter of the Fox King. Bai Qian a well-respected High Goddess in the heavenly realm, worshipped for her beauty and is the current female monarch of Qing Qiu. She is also full of sorrow and drinks her woes away…

As Si Yin, as Bai Qian’s Alias as the disciple of Mo Yuan, the God of War on Kunlun Mountain and the master and owner of the heavenly weapon / artifact the Fan of Yuqingkunlun.

While as Su Su, who is Bai Qian’s mortal identity as well as the mortal wife of Ye Hua, the Crown Prince of Heaven, whom she has a son with, A-Li.  But, the misunderstandings occurred in their relationship which includes Su-jin, the jealous assigned concubine selected by the Heavenly Lord for Ye Hua as well as the people of the Heaven clan’s abhorrence toward mortals and Ye Hua believing his indifference to her will protect her. Instead, it leads to her committing suicide by jumping off the Zhu Xian terrace, unknowingly knowing that destroys any mortal soul the jumps off, since she believes that Ye Hua betrayed her after taking her sight away thinking he believed false accusations about her.  Since she was not really a mortal, her soul was not destroyed…instead she returned to her goddess identity and all her memories as a mortal are sealed.

While Yang Yang is a popular actor who made his debut in the Chinese drama ‘The Dream of Red Mansions.’ But what really helped spike his popularity was his performance in the coming of age film, ‘The Left Ear’ as well as participation in travel reality show ‘Divas Hit the Road’ which totally put him on top in the star ranking. He also starred in ‘The Lost Tomb’ and popular sports youth drama ‘The Whirlwind Girl.’ And soon after starring in the tv version of Love 020. Which was also soon after followed by even more roles and success.

In Once Upon A Time, Yang Yang plays main role of Ye Hua as well as the supporting role of Mo Yuan, the God of War.

As Ye Hua, he is the Crown Prince of the Nine Heavens in the world of the Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses.

As Mo Yuan, in this movie version…shhhhh it’s a surprise! Hehe Kind of different from the drama and novel version of Mo Yuan. And that is all I am going to say…

Anyways…

Moving on now…

A slight recap of beginning and then my review…

Unlike in the drama where the story begins in a majestic mythical land Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses with Bai Qian is about to meet Mo Yuan for the first time as a male discipline in disguise…

In this movie version Once Upon A Time, Bai Qian playfully running away from her servant as her servant to trying to get her prepared to go attend a celebration at the Sea Kingdom… Bai Qian is reluctant to go…but she knows she must as the Queen of Qing Qiu…

Before she goes and attend the Sea Kingdom’s celebration, she visits her master Mo Yuan’s hidden secret sanctuary that Bai Qian established herself decades back after the fall of Mo Yuan after he saved the Four Seas and Eight Wildernesses from the destruction of Qing Cang, the terrible Ghost Lord who caused the Great War between the Ghost Tribe and the Nine Heavens….  Bai Qian disguised as the male discipline Si Yin retrieved Mo Yuan’s body, hid it and preserved it, believing that one day he will come back to life as he’d promised her and the rest of his disciples…

Anyways upon her visit to Mo Yuan’s body, she hopes that he will one day come back and then tells him…she fills like she is missing something because cannot place or recall what she is missing…

Scene shifts to the celebration at the Sea Kingdom…

There Bai Qian meets the adorable A Li and the cocky Crown Prince of the Nine Heavens, Ye Hua, who strangely seems to not only know a lot of her but is trying his very best to get closer to her…

In Ye Hua’s case…he and Bai Qian are actually meeting again after so long….just that Bai Qian both indifferent and have no memories of Ye Hua, that Ye Hua does everything he can to get her to love him again.

This is where the story between them begin as who they really are… Bai Qian as the reigning queen of Qing Qiu while Ye Hua is the Crown Prince of the Nine Heavens… who since many years back have been betrothed by the previous monarchs for their reigning regions…

Anyways I will leave the summary of the beginning part of the movie here, and it is up to you guys if you want to proceed with the rest of the movie, not only to see if you will like it but also to see if this movie version is different or it follows the novel and the drama version of Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms…

Moving on…

Overall… I love this Chinese Movie version of Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms… Once Upon A Time!

Honestly compared to its drama counterpart Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms… the drama was standing out more to me, making the movie somewhat lacking…

But… I can still say that Once Upon A Time is one of the best fantasy historical movies I seen. What more? This movie version has Liu Yifei and one of my favorite Chinese actors Yang Yang, respectively as the movie version of Bai Qian and Yehua!

And I thought Liu Yifei and Yang Yang did an awesome job in their roles even though the characters are slightly different from that drama counterparts… And well…lacking on the chemistry even though they both gorgeous and talented… The spark just wasn’t all there…

Another thing is…this movie is very condensed and slightly different from its 58-episode drama version  Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms starring Yang Mi and Mark Chao! Which I totally love, cause the chemistry was just amazing! But I still thoroughly enjoyed the movie version Once Upon A Time starring Liu Yifei and Yang Yang…

Yes… Once Upon A Time has a slightly different take, chemistry lacking between main leads especially if you drama first, and kind of lackluster compared to the drama version…

…But the movie was still interesting and I liked it!

Even if the lighting of the scenes is at the brighter side, the costuming and cinematography is undeniably beautiful like the drama…but you can tell that the directors were aiming at elaborating the cinematography more than the costumes. The scenes are vivid, very colorful, and picturesque.

I do not want to reveal too much even though I likely did reveal more than enough in the character descriptions as well as the summary but there is a lot more, I did not talk about!

The story is although not as intricate as the drama version… The movie version is still very well developed and a little more to the point.  There is drama, yes, and crazy messed of people or crazy female characters like Xuan Nu and the jealous assigned concubine Su-jin… But I got to say, like the drama counterparts…the respective actresses who played these two female characters in the movie did an awesome job, because I despise them, yet I also pitied them because they had so many insecurities which lead them to become very obsessive and be bad or evil. These ladies might be pitied for their insecurities, but they still did bad things, and they got their karma… All I can say without saying too much but they definitely express that “Beauty is the eye of the beholder”, cause to me they may be beautiful on the outside, but their actions and personalities screams the opposite! Although I can say this movie version Xuan Nu and Su-jin are a tad less crazier than their drama counterparts, but they still express that “Beauty is the  eye of the beholder” and their insecurities still made them undeniably bad women who will get their karmas.

Anyways…

I totally recommend you check out this movie version Once Upon A Time especially if you already watched the drama and you are curious to see a different take of it. You might feel it to be lacking compared to the drama, but it is still an interesting watch!

Anyways if you made it up to here… Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review on the Chinese movie version of Eternal Love: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms…. Once Upon A Time Starring Liu Yifei and Yang Yang!
