BLACKPINK HOW YOU LIKE THAT MV Review

Hello all!

This is going to be a little different from my usual “Kpop Music” reviews…because I usually review albums…

But in this case, I will be doing a MV Review!

And who will be the focus of my FIRST EVER KPOP MV REVIEW?…

BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA! BLACKPINK IS THE REVOLUTION! 😉

Anyways…

BLACKPINK recently released that pre-release song since their release of KILL THIS LOVE..

And the pre-release song is called HOW YOU LIKE THAT?

Peace out for the delay…I know I am really late and it has been three weeks since the song release…

But had a lot on my plate…and had to push out the other reviews before I get to this…

And to also get enough them to gather thoughts to give a honest, as much as possible, unbiased review…

Anyways…

For the love of BLACKPINK….

PRESENTING!!!

BLACKPINK HOW YOU LIKE THAT MV Review

Disclaimer: I do not own #BLACKPINK …(But I am a #BLINK / #YGartists #YGstan ). Also information about them and pictures of them I’ve gotten online. Peace out!

First off, like all of my previous album reviews post, I want to clarify I am no musical expert. But I am a music lover who is particularly leaning or more inclined towards KPOP & other Asian music. Don’t get me wrong I am into all kinds of music like classical music, instrumental to anime theme songs and International artists as well like Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, Jojo, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Taylor Swift, NSYNC etc etc, just to name a few. But as I mentioned before I lean a little more towards KPOP especially these past couple years.

Also, like I mentioned many times in all of my previous KPop album reviews, my interest in KPOP all started with the debut of 2NE1, BLACKPINK’s,  iKON’s, WINNER’s and Lee Hi’s older sister group from the same entertainment agency. The same group…who Park Bom, in my previous album review was also in…

2NE1 opened the doors to me to KPOP, with BIGBANG another sibling BUT elder group steeping deeply into my heart, followed by other artists including iKON, WINNER, BLACKPINK and LEE HI in their entertainment agency, YG entertainment. But more of them  on another time, including 2NE1 cause to me 2NE1 is always forever and legendary!

But for now, the focus of my review is on BLACKPINK and their pre-release song and the MV of, How You Like That. Peace out btw for going off topic. 😊 Warning, I might do this every once in a while. LOL

Just to add, I want to clarify this review is like a mention before is from my thoughts, feelings and possibility on interpretation of the song and the MV… So you don’t have to take what I say seriously just with a grain of salt. But I do hope this gets you interested in BLACKPINK and KPOP as a whole.

Btw, just a little tidbit…TEDDY is the main producer of all 2NE1 and BLACKPINK’s songs. TEDDY is also a former 1TYM band member and a main producer with a comprehensive production discography.   He is such a genius…. a talented lyricist, composer and producer. He is the great mind to both 2NE1 and BLACKPINK’s discography. Also well as being involved in the production of artists songs within and outside of YG. TEDDY also became the head of YG entertainment subsidiary agency THE BLACK LABEL.

Anyways…

Now … Just a little bit about BLACKPINK…

They are a four-member female KPOP group. The quartet from oldest to youngest consists of Kim Jisoo aka JISOO, Kim Jennie aka JENNIE, Park Chaeyoung aka ROSE and Lisa Manoban aka LISA. They are currently one of the top girl groups on their generation in Korea, as well as internationally. They are also the first K-Pop girl groups to perform at Coachella. They also had their 1st World Tour! Now, they are finally back after a long hiatus with their pre-release of How You Like That!

Now…

On to the actual review!

BLACKPINK’s HOW YOU LIKE THAT!! Woohoo!!!

Their official comeback…well pre-release…hehe

Okay first off, you can say that I had high expectations for the song and the mv especially since BLACKPINK is from YG in general…

The home of “Monster Rookies” and “Hit after Hit” and “All Kills”…

The MVs for YG artists both current and former such as 2NE1, BIGBANG, IKON, WINNER, JINUSEAN, LEE HI, SE7EN, PSY, GUMMY, 1TYM, and BLACKPINK of course…always high production value! Exceptionally good quality, so I was already hyped!

Another my taste in music is mainly R&B and Hip Hop and if it is going to be a headbanger, in my opinion should be a In Your Face / Double Jab kind of vibe… Like most YG hype songs are.

Also, BLACKPINK had been on hiatus for a long time…to the point that whatever little thing they release such as Instagram Photos, Instagram Live, V-Live and Personal Youtube channels such as LISA’s LiliFilm Official centered around her dancing and photography and videography skills….

Those special little things for a fan and a stan isjust so precious, you will take them all in…

Anyways…since this is a Review of the MV of BLACKPINK’s HOW YOU LIKE THAT…

My first MV review actually…

I will be as honest as possible…not show too much bias…be as neutral as possible…even though I am a longtime YG artist fan… I would love what they put whether or not it is worth the hype…

And most of the time YG artists’ music is SO WORTH THE HYPE. Because of the quality! Especially their MVs, whether or not the song fits according to my own personal taste…

So fellow BLINKS, BLACKPINK FANS who are multi-stans and YG stans…if I say anything negative…PEACE OUT… I mean no offense, but as I said earlier, I am just being honest, not showing much bias and trying to be neutral as I can be…

Here it goes…for real now…

First off with the music…as in the song only…

Once again, no offense…PEACE…

The song was good and awesome and a banger in its own way…

But if I go according to my taste… I was expecting more…since lots of hints of HOW YOU LIKE THAT as a badass stronger and harder kind of song.  Especially from the teasers… And like I mentioned earlier I am not an expert…

But I did notice that the beginning started really strong and hard like I assumed was how the direction of the song was going to go just before Lisa comes in and says “Blackpink in your area..” and that was when I was caught off guard that it kind of restarts at a slightly lower, moderate level and the song pretty stays at that level…

Do not get me wrong though, it is still a badass song in its own right but I was expecting something more and I felt like it was missing something…

Anyways I was expecting more of a “triple jab” kind… especially since Badass YG songs that I am more used to are more “In Your Face”… like 2NE1’s FIRE, I AM THE BEST and CRUSH; BIGBANG’s FANTASTIC BABY, BANG BANG BANG; IKON’S BDAY, BLING BLING, ANTHEM, SINOSIJAK; WINNER’s REALLY REALLY, NOT ANOTHER BOY; EPIK HIGH’s BORN HATER; BLACKPINK’s BOOMBAYAH, AS IF IT IS YOUR LAST, DDU DU DDU DU, KILL THIS LOVE etc etc.

Also, I felt like it was lacking something…which I still cannot really put my finger on, but this is what is making me not really get into the song that much… But I assume it is beats… not totally positive though…

But I did found that transitioning beats and music on each of the members parts does fit the emotions they are trying to express…Most especially matching the visual aspects of the MV.

Anyways, if I think of it objectively, I believe BLACKPINK are going through a different direction or more specific a different level of badass-ness… Instead of the usual “Triple Jab”, “In Your Face” kind, they went for a more subtle, double uppercut kind…

Basically, this to me is not a explosive song 😎 but the level of the hype of the song is leading towards a lot at the subtle, sassiness 😏. Like the girls are taunting whoever they were singing too.

Even though in the lyrics it is about when others watches your downfall and sees your lowest points  but then you start pulling yourself out of the dark place thus proving those that wanted to see you fail that you in fact better than them.

Anyways…

And I feel that even though it was not according to my taste and I was expecting more and felt it was lacking something….

It is still a banger of a song!

The girls did amazingly well as always! Jennie’s vocals were awesome! Lisa slayed her raps! Jisoo did so well, totally accentuating her vocals thus proving those who doubt her talent as wrong as she keeps improving every comeback. And Rose…her vocals are undeniable, she really highlighted the song for me!

The song overall works for them and was tailor made for them. They SLAYED IT!

And How You Like That is still quality music.

Also, this is also a Pre-release… I figured that How You Like That as the appetizer before they present the main course… So once again, I am anticipating and looking forward to the main release! Lol

Crossfingers, that I remained somewhat neutral on the actual song…

Moving On…

Now with the MV of How You Like That…

Oh… my goodness…the production value and the quality is just amazing! No denying!

AMAZING!

YG Entertainment always serves when it comes to quality!

From the lighting, the scale of the set, the set itself, the costumes, the dance…overall a knockout of the ballpark!!! Amazing!!!

The sets were amazing! And I total felt that they were telling a story and it either connected or was a continuation of the from the visual story from the previous MVs of Ddu Du Ddu Du and Kill This Love respectively… Or at least reminds me of their previous bangers’ MVs.

Anyways…

I might be reaching… but I thought it was interesting each BLACKPINK member seems to represent a deity or a historical or mythological figurehead…

For instance, Jisoo is the Lady of Justice who is taking off the blindfold… This part reminds me of  Ddu Du Ddu Du when she was being judged and the cellphones were the guns, but she comes stronger. In How You Like That’s case I am assuming that she is revealing that she is the Lady of Justice.

Another example Rose, I believe she is depicting that she is the Greek Goddess of Spring and Wife of Hades… Because she is at first surrounded by dark elements and the scene switches to her surrounded by flowers…

While Jennie, seems to represent the Goddess of Snow, Khione… Especially with her part because of her icy cold set and looks.

And finally Lisa, reminds me of Cleopatra… not only because of her short hair and bangs but the  backdrop of her set and how change in the song during her part.

Anyways my favorite individual scenes of theirs were of course Jennie’s Ice-Cold scene. I exceptionally love Jisoo in All Red with Burning umbrellas scene…such an ethereal beauty but dangerous!

I dont know why, but her umbrella scene reminds of a Chinese drama I am thinking of watching called Bloody Romance,  where beautiful but deadly women assassins use special umbrellas as their weapons… Just that I really don’t follow the actors or actresses there. But we shall see… I do have a habit on getting around to actually watching dramas I am not sure about either way!

Anyways…back to my favorite scenes with each member…

For Rose… it is Dark and Flowers transitional Scene. And I love Lisa’s entire rap scene…so badass.

I thought the girls all slayed those scenes! So gorgeous and awesome!

With all of them together, my favorite scene was of course the breakdown near of the song! And what I love and found interesting about that is the two Trojan Horses and the World pictured in the background… Hinting that they are stealthy invading the entire world with their power…

Anyways…

Overall, as I mentioned before, How You Like That may not be my type…but this song is still awesome and tailor made for them  Teddy, the other producers and BLACKPINK did an amazing job musically. Like I said earlier…an appetizers just before the main course!  😏 So anticipating their next song…

MV wise, the production value is at a different level. I find it amazing and blows you off your feet as you try to interpret all the hidden messages in the MVs.  The impression I got from BLACKPINK especially this MV overall…. The vibe BLACKPINK gives off a Subtle Badassery but Sexy concept while displaying their subtle charms, strength, and power! Which they are totally slaying!  Not your typical K-POP girl group and NOT bubblegum pop.

Of course, 2NE1 is still and forever will be my Ultimate Badass Girl Crush Group.

But, on BLACKPINK… I am sure even though they have their slow releases of music with their mini albums…and singles…

BLACKPINK IS and ARE rocking and owning their own personal concept.

By the way, tad off topic…

I am so happy my #BLACKPINK x #KRUNK #KILLTHISLOVE Keychain Doll finally arrived!
