The Villainess Korean Movie Review

Hello again, I hope all of you are doing well and are safe…

Anyways…

I’ve binged watched this Korean movie this past weekend…  and I made sure I gave all of my thoughts on this…especially since this is in my 1st ever Korean movie review for the month of JULY!!!

Anyways been a long time coming and finally presenting…

The Villainess Korean Movie Review

Disclaimer: Pictures of the movie, cast are not mine. And just add, info on the cast I got from Wikipedia, MyDramaList and Asian wiki.✌️

The Villainess can be found on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video!

Anyways…

First off… please don’t take what I say seriously… just with a grain of salt, like with music. I do not have a professional degree in film, literature and television… But I do LOVE movies, books and tv shows, most especially if they capture my interest somehow.

And…

Despite the lack of degree, I will still do this Korean Movie review as a Korean show lover and a Movie lover…. And just to clarify too, I apologize for any run-ons or any grammatical errors… But I will definitely be honest about my thoughts and feelings in this review.

Anyways…

I will first talk about the main actress of The Villainess…Kim Ok-vin..

Kim Ok-vin is a South Korean actress. She made her debut in online beauty contest in 2004 and began her acting career with a role in the 2005 film Voice. She appeared in numerous projects including the tv series Over the Rainbow, 2011’s Poseidon, 2013’s The Blade and Petal, most recent 2019’s Arthdal Chronicles and films like Dasepo Naughty Girls and the The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan, 2017’s The Villaness, the Discloser.  She also received several award nominations, including winning Best Actress in 2009 Sitges Film Festivals for her role in Thirst. She is also known to be well trained in martial arts as a child, attained third dan in Hapkido and second dan in Taekwondo. Practices muay thai and boxing well having various other interest. It is also known that she has a IQ of 141 and is ambidextrous.

In The Villainess, Kim Ok-vin plays the main role in this film, The Villainess by the name of Sook-hee. As a child, she witnessed the murder of her father over a family heirloom. She was then sold off by a family friend…  But before harm befell on her by her captor, she was rescued by an assassin who saved her. Not long after that assassin trained her to become an assassin herself as she strived to take revenge on her father’s murderer. She soon falls in love with him and not long after they marry and had their honeymoon night. But around that time, he had to leave for a job and was “brutally  killed”, and so in rage Sook-hee went on a killing rampage on those we had a hand in his death…thus leading to her arrest and is recruited by a secret agency while in incarcerated to became their assassin in order to earn her freedom especially learning something important…

Moving on…

The summary of the beginning half of the The Villainess…

In the opening scene, an unnamed highly skilled and trained assassin enters a hallway and kills numerous people with her gun and knives before being surrounded by cops and smiling a grim smile.

The assassin is shown in a room in an unnamed facility. She is drugged and is given plastic surgery. While recuperating, she has a flashback showing an unnamed man with a mustache trying to resuscitate her after a breath holding exercise. He is calling her Sook-hee.

The facility turns out to be part of South Korea’s intelligence agency and is run by a woman named Kwon-sook. Kwon-sook tells Sook-hee that to give her a new start the agency has faked her death. Kwon-sook tells her they have given her a new identity and name, Chae Yeon-soo. Yeon-soo says she does not care and wants to die. Kwon-sook tells Yeon-soo she is pregnant. Kwon-sook offers her a deal: train with her as an agent, work as an agent, and she will have freedom after 10 years of service. Yeon-soo accepts and while in training, gives birth to a daughter, Eun-hye.

Still at the facility, Yeon-soo is having a procedure to remove a tattoo from her shoulder and while this is happening, she has a flashback to the unnamed man with a mustache giving her the shoulder tattoo when she was 20-year-old Sook-hee. Another flashback occurs, and we again see 20-year-old Sook-hee as a highly skilled and trained assassin trying to kill an unnamed man with yellow teeth. Sook-hee is captured and, while beating her, the unnamed man with yellow teeth tells her he did not kill her father. Eventually, the unnamed man with a mustache arrives, shoots the man with yellow teeth, and frees Sook-hee. The flashback continues, and we see Sook-hee as an 8-year-old being trained to load a pistol by the unnamed man with a mustache. The man tells the young Sook-hee to devote her life as an assassin to him…

And this is where I will leave this summary off, as to not spoil too much of the story…

Now my actual review which is honestly will be much shorter than the recap of the story…

This is because I don’t want to spoil the movie too much..

First and foremost….

Kim Ok-vin is totally badass!!! I so want to see her in another action femme fatale movie like here The Villainess! She is amazing not only as an actress but as a skilled woman in various martial arts and handling of weapons! I am no expert or had any training in martial arts, but I love action movies….

But from what I can tell that she had been training since she was young especially from her techniques and form. And clearly noted that she had training since she was young too from reports and articles online.

Anyways…

In my opinion, Kim Ok-vin is the epitome of a badass woman!!!  And even more awesome, she is in NETFLIX’s Arthdal Chronicles as Taealha! She is totally amazing there too by the way. As Taealha she is like a dangerous, cold, manipulative beauty, who you can’t help but to love and hate! In The Villainess as Sook-hee, you can’t help but root for her and feel sorry for her…and also admire her badassness.

The rest of the cast did well in their roles too whether they are major, supporting or major characters!

Anyways…

On the movie itself, even though the storyline is slightly cliché or similar to other assassin movies I’ve watched, that is… if along the lines of woman turning into an assassin to get revenge… I still enjoyed the movie!

The early parts of the movie during Ok-vin’s Sook-hee’s training at the agency made me thought of the Black Widow’s training in the Red Room…

Which I find totally cool  and badass!

Also making me can’t wait but will wait patiently either way for the release of the Black Widow movie…

Anyways…

Moving on…Yes, it does have some slow parts but once the story gets going and the action comes in. To me, it becomes dynamic and close to heart stopping. The style of the movie is an interesting mix of John Wick, Kill Bill, Nikita etc. But, you got to see it in order to see what I mean…

There were so many scenes I liked but I found her final fight scene as the most memorable especially against the guy who I know as a badass actor…

The Villainess is like a blend between John Wick, Kill Bill and Le Femme Nikita which I found interesting…

Anyways, I highly recommend The Villainess! It is an awesome movie!

But fair warning…. like my previous posts, such as JAILBREAK, MARIA and BUYBUST, there is gore and intense action fight scenes, so this movie The Villainess is so not for kids!

Once again, the The Villainess can be found on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video!
